Wow, this sleep schedule is absolutely *amaaaaazing. Laid down at 7:30, fell asleep close to 9:00, just now woke up, at 3:00. Why do I always manage to do this to myself in finals week? Hey, at least it's my last finals week in K12 though!

TheQuinbox,

@carrottop1023 I'm about to be, yup. In my last week this week.

TheQuinbox,

@carrottop1023 Thanks! :)

The fundamental problem with the concept of alt text is that it's language specific, while pictures are not.

There are plenty of social media accounts that post pictures and videos that are universally funny, beautiful or interesting, regardless of the language you speak.

This is one more reason why fixing accessibility problems by inventing better technology for ourselves is a better approach than fixing accessibility by advocating for it. Even if you teach every single content creator on the planet to write alt descriptions and write them well, which is a monumental task in itself, this still won't solve the problem for the creators that have a multilingual audience. If you teach an AI to write good alt descriptions for those pictures, the problem will be solved for everyone.

To be clear, we're not quite at that point yet, as good as GPT Vision now is, it still doesn't beat a skilled human describer, but I think we'll get there quite soon.

TheQuinbox,

@miki It doesn't? My family members, for their part, have taken to just sending me images now and letting me run them through Be My AI, it consistently gets better descriptions than they're able to provide.

TheQuinbox,

@miki Honestly I'm very happy with the current GPT 4 tech, the main thing I want at this point is for it to be on-device and in my screen reader. I give it a couple years.

TheQuinbox,

@miki There are, of course, things it just flat out fails at, like telling me how full a glass vial is. Although honestly part of this may have been a blindness error, there could've been a reflection or a glare because of the light that made it look different or something, I have no idea.

I all but gave up on online voice chatting about a year ago, except in a few trusted communities. Sometimes I consider coming back, and then I remember all the stress and awkwardness I felt and push the thought away.

TheQuinbox,

@MutedTrampet Yup, completely and totally this. It started stopping for me in 2023 I think, like right in the beginning I started closing my social circle more and more tightly, until it got to where it is now.

TheQuinbox,

@MutedTrampet Yup, this. Also though, for some reason voice feels different, and something switched when 2023 started that made me start getting less and less comfortable with it. The list of people who I've voice chatted with at all recently is only like 6 or 7 names long.

Hey everyone! I've got some very good news! So did you guys think that the natural voices would be exclusive to narrator? Did you guys think the natural voices wouldn't even make it to other screen readers? Well, you all thought wrong! Because guess what? Thanks to a video on YouTube, I found out there is an NVDA addon for these voices! And it even works on windows 10! You can get this addon at datajake.braillescreen.net, TTS, synthesizers for NVDA, and titled neural voices. The rest of you guys can thank me later! Feel free to boost this post! It deserves one!

TheQuinbox,

@jscholes @NoahCarver @drew @datajake1999 @DavidGoldfield @mckensie If you run strings on Windows 11 Narrator and grep for the API key, you'll find it.

It just occurred to me that come June 22, I'll have had a phone for 10 years. Getting my 4S was truly my entrance into online communities, and so I'm very close to having been on the internet for 10 years. I definitely, definitely had access too young. In June of 2014, I was 8. That's just a tiny bit insane.

TheQuinbox,

@cordova5029 SO I was... 5 months old. Wow.

@liamerven Happy birthday! If I open up Judgement Day, I wonder if there'll be a trophy...

TheQuinbox,

@alexhall @liamerven Maybe if you open another game there will be too. You'll have to eggxit judgement day first though ;)

Wanted a command I could type super quickly to get my OS version on Linux, and came up with this after about 5 minutes. I just have
function osver() {
cat /etc/os-release | grep PRETTY_NAME= | cut -d'=' -f2- | tr -d '"'
}
in my .bash_profile and it all works.

Has anyone ever just, completely unintentionally irreparably hosed a server that multiple people were part of, multiple times? Just me? Because I feel fucking absolutely beyond terrible right now.

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence Um oh no, why is it 502ing of all things? Can confirm that those are the results on my end. HTTP/1.1 502 Bad Gateway
Server: nginx/1.18.0
Date: Sat, 04 May 2024 07:38:13 GMT
Content-Type: text/html
Content-Length: 1483
Connection: keep-alive
ETag: "6635a62a-5cb"
If you want you can toss the logs over my way, I'm not gonna be sleeping for a few hours so can scan through them. Also, thank you for using Ubuntu. Enjoy ads in your apt output :D

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence journalctl? Maybe /var/log/journalctl or something? I haven't looked at that structure much.

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence Um. Um um um um. Dude. Bro. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat! Kill that process, like last year. Alsy hea, it's /var/log/journal

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence Jeeeeesus!

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence Oh yup that would do it. Didn't know about --no-tail but redirecting stdout to a file should be enough yeah.

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence Now you run du -h file.txt and have a heart attack

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence Sweet Jesus Christ on a bloody cracker. That's like, a 10th the size of Windows these days. In plaintext. I very much do not need all of that lmao

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence Dropbox. Mason added a very beeg file to your dropbox

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence I will, my notepad 2 will not. That's okay though, just tail -n 1000 file.txt > file2.txt

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence Ehh, on my server... 377M journal.txt

TheQuinbox,

@FluidEscence You're running a mastodon server, I'm running nginx and teamtalk.
