@dmoser the photos show Swiss railways. In Switzerland, this solution was adopted in the 1990s to 2000 to bring some of the cross-boundary north-south truck traffic away from congested roads in narrow mountain valleys. Its a politically realistic compromise, given that there was no chance to hope for a european solution (which would be train transport all the way from Netherlands and Hamburg to Italy).

I was in physics at that time.
Rain fell. Next morning colleagues reported radiation measurements of the rain. Fellow student immediately pulled off his👖he’d worn in that rain. The physicists organized a meeting to inform the public. The ministry forbade the measurements. 1/2

@rahmstorf I was 6 years old, and still remember a shot of an endless row of firefighter trucks driving to , shown on the Swiss TV news. After that, an expert discussion round, saying kids shouldnnot go outdoors, dont drink milk. From this year, my drawings book became full of catastrophies. I had realised that there was something wrong with the world I was growing up.
