funnily enough, among desktop distros, i get more macos readers than from any other os. i was expecting linux users to be more than windows users but the higher-than-usual proportion of linux users is still unsurprising

you've heard of udp holepunching, yes, but how about tcp holepunching? just nc addr port -p port on both sides. you surely won't regret it

@astrid@fedi.astrid.tech avatar

@whitequark i did it over a link local connection no less.

basically it was on a pair of Linux machines, the command was something like nc -v addr port -p port where both ports are the same on both sides, and then you run it on both computers, and it opens up a tcp stream. The point of this was to perform a TCP hole punch on each of the devices firewalls to do file transfers without prior configuration. It was very finicky but I was able to do it several times.

@whitequark I haven't tested it very much but I would like to test it more and write another blog post specifically about that

astrid,
@astrid@fedi.astrid.tech avatar

@whitequark the two computers were directly connected via a single ethernet cable too. it was super silly

astrid,
@astrid@fedi.astrid.tech avatar

@whitequark here ya go
but basically it looks like there is a syn, synack, ack going in each direction

astrid,
@astrid@fedi.astrid.tech avatar

@whitequark i even tried a several-second wait time between each side opening and it still appears to work!

astrid,
@astrid@fedi.astrid.tech avatar

@whitequark it's such a silly trick omg

astrid,
@astrid@fedi.astrid.tech avatar

@whitequark still resillient with 5 second wait time, it's just trying to retransmit the syn a bunch
