Have you ever watched a movie that had a moment that made no sense and it just went on like it didn't happen?
"It Follows", a horror film from a few years back had this - a random scene where some teenagers are hanging out watching TV when one pulls out a plastic seashell, flips it open, and it's some kind of e-reader / telephone with circular screens?
Embarrassing. I absolutely believed Phanpy did not have quote posting capabilities. I have even been jumping over to a different app on the rare occasion I use that feature, copying the post url, etc. over so I could find it. 🤦♂️
How could I miss it? The only thing I can think of is that at one time it didn't have them (I have been a Phanpy fan for a very long time), so I just blinded myself to them not being there out of habit.
I even run my own personal phanpy client instance. :psyduck:
The three things that have helped me find a safe, happy social home on a larger instance are carefully curating who I follow, the hashtags I follow and keyword muting. This is my own self generated algorithm.
Still getting my bearings about how to make a smaller instance just as vibrant. Relays? Being more lax about who I follow? Maybe some of the newer fedi platforms like @newsmast and @Flipboard can help. I know @mammoth has hand curated topic feeds as well.

One thing I would definitely do if I started my own instance is to have 2 accounts on it.
With one I'd curate selectively, as you've been doing. With the other, I'd follow as widely as possible, while still filtering out noise. The first account is where you live. The second populates your federated timeline, hashtag searches etc.
I saw a post today about another Mastodon API endpoint that is kind of in a zombie state (I looked into Featured Profiles awhile back).
This one is a “Mastodon Wrapped" end of year review.
On m.s. it's accessible but as expected doesn't return any data. Currently, the admin would have to jump to the console and run a task to populate the reports.
Like other "wrapped" end of year summaries, it's only available to the user.
I watched a few of the ChatGPT 4o demos today and what disturbs me isn’t the usage, but the men’s behavior demoing it.
Most of the time, the voice assistant was a female voice. When the AI didn’t do exactly what was desired or they just wanted to move forward, they would interrupt it in mid sentence and ask it something else.
It gave me the same perceived emotion as when I saw this video for the first time. Sad and sick to my stomach.
@wlf_warren Yeah, agreed. I get it is bits and bytes. But the behavior itself is gross, and with the conversational pattern being so lifelike and somewhat flirty (just…why?) how long before we start seeing this behavior becoming worse than it is already in meetings and conversations with real people.
I was using a testflight app and thought I was setting up a list of instances to view their public timelines - turns out it was an instance block list. 😖
So I lost all my hachyderm.io followers and follows. If you followed me, I didn't block you on purpose. Sorry! Please feel free to re-follow.
Luckily, Mastodon kept a backup of those lists for me, so I was able to identify the losses and re-import my follows at least.
🪑⑁💺 Looking for home office chair recommendations. 🪑⑁💺
I work from home full time. I spend 8 hour plus extra at night sometimes for study sessions / programming hobbies. Fairly regular sized person, looking for back support - I currently sit at the edge of my seat for some reason. Probably not good.
Willing to spend some money on this, although I will mumble and grumble about it.
@jnv I found an Aeron for dirt cheap - company going out of business. Had to go pick it up immediately. They had 35 chairs and sold out right after I got there. Thanks for the recommendation!

Reminiscing about a time when lgbtq bars were more than a tourist attraction or profit margin, serving as a safe space for the local community to gather.
Is it progress, and we just don’t need them? Or have safe spaces moved online because it’s easier.
It's wonderful to see discussions occurring on the fediverse like this. I think a future challenge, as more diverse federated platforms become popular, will be figuring out better ways to display content in your feed based on it's origin.
An example - this thread (with some very long posts) is readable in my Mastodon timeline, but definitely easier to read in a discussion oriented format like Discourse.
