Contemplating going back to Ubuntu LTS from opensuse tumbleweed: with Nix on Ubuntu LTS it would easy to have a stable base with bleeding edge dev envs

Here are some great tutorials on using Nix with R versions. Thank you @brodriguesco

https://www.brodrigues.co/tags/nix/

and videos, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3t83-2aNwY

I just tried getting started with and despite the great systems crafters material provided by @daviwil on Guile, found installation of Nix was much easier, and seems to have more up-to-date package ecosystem than Guix.

Worth a look @lgatto

@sje @daviwil @lgatto ESS is the reason I switched from Vim to Emacs 😁 no regrets!

@sje @daviwil @lgatto if you’re going through {rix} package and have feedback, it’ll be more than welcome! 👍

@sje @lgatto @daviwil amazing I'll give it a shot!

An unexpected benefit from fixing packages for is that you discover some super useful ones. Like {opencv} for face detection and other image analysis tasks, {unrtf} to process rich text files {asciicast} to create animated code displays, and the indispensable {switchboard} with a Pikachu-shaped progress bar.

It's also great fun to work with @brodriguesco, @specphil et al.

brodriguesco,
@brodriguesco@fosstodon.org avatar

@kupac @specphil It's also a great way to learn Nix :)

so mods removed the post, but what do you think? agree/disagree

brodriguesco,
@brodriguesco@fosstodon.org avatar

@jimgar IMO, it’s not about having something as close to dplyr as possible, but having functions as standalone objects and not as methods linked to objects. Being able to directly manipulate functions, and compose them when needed. For example, in Python, I have to scrape my tables first and then I can start my polars workflow: https://github.com/b-rodrigues/raps_with_py/blob/b8b9fc2ae1001e405025cc31d0f143096f26d8d4/scripts/save_data.py#L160

in R I could do everything in one go. At the end of the day, what matters is the result, but I think that how you get there matters as well.

What’s the light-weight DE for ? Something like or ?

brodriguesco,
@brodriguesco@fosstodon.org avatar

@Anachron I’ll be using sway much likely, but I still want some of the features of a DE. I use lxqt+i3 and it’s a nice combo.

@LXQt ah nice! Think I’ll wait for 2.0 then!

The funniest time I got RTFM'ed was when I asked a question about 's NAR format on their matrix server and got linked to the creator's phd thesis

To be fair, it did answer my question! And I read the rest of the thesis which was interesting.
