I like reggae and making cocktails. I work with code and pixels on the web, like everybody else. I do other things too.

I’m a fan of the indie web, DIY mentality, and fewer dependencies.

Working on a language extension for the #zed editor, and it's a long time since I've been this underwhelmed by documentation. Like how each language extension is required to have a 'languages' directory, and this is literally the only documentation on that requirement.

brookie,
@brookie@hachyderm.io avatar

@anderseknert i tried making some extensions for syntax highlighting in zed, but had to inspect other samples found in rando github issues in the zed repository.

and even then i messed it up somehow and it didn’t work and i gave up.

    It’s Friday, and spring is here. If that doesn’t call for a cold one outside, I’m not sure what does. Some “China chips” as Hanna calls them, to go with that. Life is good.

    even though it’s a bummer, i don’t understand why there’s a mob against apple’s “”killing of web apps”” on iOS.

    isn’t it their OS, with which they can do (almost) what they please? it’s too bad, but what’s with the “WE MUST FIGHT BACK” lingo? 🫢

    i’m constantly thinking “cmon on, who cares about PWAs anyway”. then i think “hm if apple actually invested in web APIs for doing cool stuff with iOS, it’d be sweet”.

    it’s like “nobody builds serious PWAs for iOS because you can’t do too much because Apple doesn’t want you to” 🤡

    Writing some for a project and… meh. It feels like JavaScript turned Java without the stdlib. I’m sure I’d get better / used to it given some time, but the vibe isn’t there for me. Fast feedback loop > strict typing any day IMHO, but to each their own.

    brookie,
    @brookie@hachyderm.io avatar

    @anderseknert for one off scripts or front end lulz — sure. but for any non-trivial front end app or backend system, i’d consider switching away from JS runtimes completely if TS wasn’t there to save my ass 😄

    Unless you work in Zurich, you are underpaid as a software engineer in Europe compared to your US peers.

    @anderseknert @Jeremiah yes, i’d assume the same? that being in the US requires so much more cash to just exist. makes it hard to compare straight off. however, living in EU and working for a US company with US salary though… 😎

    i’d be more interested in up-to-date salary comparisons in Sweden.

    @airwhale @anderseknert @Jeremiah cool! as an aside, the swedish job titles are always so … precise and opaque. "am i a "mjukvaruutvecklare" or am i in fact a "mjukvaruingenjör"?😏

    The node.js ecosystem drives me bonkers. What's even the point of having small, focused modules if they're never "done." There's always some busywork imposed by a dependency version bump, or a node incompatibility, or both

    brookie,
    @brookie@hachyderm.io avatar

    @hejsna we do all of those small functions in house now. there’s an unofficial company wide ban on installing “tiny focused modules” via npm if you can write and maintain them yourself 😄

    single negative thing about the M1/2/3 MacBooks: they don't get warm when doing heavy tasks, so they can't heat the hands during cold swedish winter mornings.

    A few years ago, I predicted car and motorcycle manufacturers would get into the e-bike market given the high demand, decent margin, and ability to differentiate with established design and manufacturing capabilities.

    Harley-Davidson’s fugly and overpriced Serial1 did not prove me right.

    However, Mini announced its E-Bike 1. It’s beautiful and priced appropriately within the high end range.

    I wasn't particularly precocious as a kid growing up in the 90's, but for whatever reason I was really into music from the 60's. Some of those years I wouldn't listen to any other radio station but the one playing "oldies" songs. Fast forward 30 years, and I didn't even know that radio channel was still a thing. But.. it was playing in the background in a bar today, and.... now they're not playing Beach Boys, but Oasis, and all those 90's songs I heard growing up. And I have never felt this old.

    The most expensive perfume I ever bought was a gift to my girlfriend, which I picked up on my way home from a business trip to Paris.

    When I gave it to her is when I learned “pour homme” means “for men” in French.

    @anderseknert congrats on using the most expensive perfume ever bought for yourself! 😍

    (offtopic [but still not]: i feel the perfume prices have gone up a lot during the last ~15 years? when i was a teenager, everybody wore some kind of cologne. it'd cost you 300-500 SEK for boss, diesel, etc. now, the same perfumes are at least 700 SEK, if not more.)

    another programming language thing. ever since i started programming, it felt so imperative and "low level" to always resort to for-loops or other array methods to do a thing on a bunch of elements. "you wanna call a method on all these items? right, you need to construct a loop for that".

    it's hard to explain now, but it felt like there was a better way. maybe like this:

    // Old, boring
    for (item in items)
     item.method()

    // New, hot
    $0.method() on items

    @anderseknert true :> so maybe if map was magically a part of the language as a reserved keyword, as per my last example:

    ["FOO", "BAR"]#(lower)
    // => ["foo", "bar"]
