So i recently got my first android phone after having been an iphone user for years. So far i am really happy and especially enjoy finding foss alternatives to as many apps as possible....
What was the first ever distro you installed and used? For me, it was Mint as I seemed like the closest thing to Windows minus all the forced updates and chappy changes....
I kept hearing mutahar (someordinarygamers) talk about virtual machines and eventually i managed to get a laptop so i tried making one and Ubuntu was my pick (cus he recommended it for noobs), i hardly knew anything ab linux then but i figured a vm would be the perfect chance to try it :) . Later on when i first decided i wanted to try rawdogging linux it was cus my friend had an old laptop he never used so i asked if i could have it and he didnt mind. The thing was so slow the start menu (the thing u open when u press the windows button) literally took minutes to open. So i eventually checked its specs and downloaded a few distros trying them out and settled on mx linux cus it seemed to tick the most amount of boxes for me :3 (also i got around downloading linux on my main device later on, been using fedora on it.)
I read “it’s dying” by people on Discord and Reddit all the time, but the numbers prove otherwise. It’s been going up this entire time and sitting over 3 billion MONTHLY ACTIVE USERS!...
Any clues on how to get regular mp4 anime torrents? Ion wana have to use my newer laptop cus the whole point of having the old one is to avoid battery wear and tear on the new one when my electricitys out ;-;
Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...
yea i think one huge advantage is that theres no specific tos for lemmy as a whole and each instance can just do whatever they want which helps loads when it comes to censorship and moderation, and theres no 1 entity that can just skeet yo off the entire platform if u break some rule (great example is how reddit seems to be silencing ppl promoting lemmy and discussions ab it)
dude helll yes i also just remembered theres that stupid barried of entry on many subs which ask u to meet really weird requirements to participate.. the other day i prompted gpt to say smt funny and wholesome (it was praise towards the aur(arch user repository)) and tried to post it on some linux/arch sub but the first 3 that came to mind wouldnt allow it, one didnt accept memes, the other had a bot which took it down automatically and the third asked me to comment and participate in the sub before posting.. like come on man.
personally i dont like apps especially on mobile as ive had negative experiences with them (my wifi is shit) but thats cool to know (yo i just noticed i said apps instead of web apps xD)
the first step or two are the hardest cus its so different from traditional social media, i made the mistake of making like 10+ mastodon accs on diff instances cus i didnt know how (or even if i could) follow/subscribe to other instances and have them in my feed xD
oh for sure, especially in like the way smaller instances in fediverse projects, theres instances of akkoma where it doesnt feel like a social media site (which an instances is technically is) but more like a groupchat/blog thing (in the style of internet way back in the day) where getting familiar with the others is easy as hell and almost natural, wholesome 101
i doubt ill be fasting from reddit cus theres always instances where i look for smt and the answers are there (like in the search results). but ima be using lemmy from now on for casual scrolling and entertainment instead
top 2 or 3 lemmy clients other than jerboa? i never was into custom clients until i found the fediverse (if were not counting modded clients for yt and deezer xD)
oh god not me. or rather not how many subs require a certain amount to be able to participate.. the barrier of entry for some communities was ridiculous
Looking for an emulator (old nintendo)
