🧑‍🏫🧑‍🦯 Dear teachers of the visually impaired,

On behalf of all congenitally blind children and mobility specialists who work with adults, please do us and them a favor. Save us all a lot of time somehow engaged in scoldings about always using our white canes by making sure we’re acquainted with it before we are subjected to, “Stay put.” when the object we want is across the room and we have to make up our own system of finding it.
Sincerely,
A blind adult who may or may not be guilt tripping

In case you think you're having a bad accessibility day today, or you wonder how much things like the ADA actually matter, @hmaealdeza is currently locked out of the #1 payment app in the Philippines because they introduced a non-optional face verification, and randomly decided to log her out. The app asks you to take a selfie, but now requires you also look at the camera and blink at the right time.

@simon @drew @hmaealdeza I just went through something like this to pay my taxes online a few weeks ago.

@changeling@mastodon.starshipchangeling.net avatar

@drew @simon @hmaealdeza Also, if you ever get locked out of your FB account, they have a similar process for unlocking it.

changeling,
@changeling@mastodon.starshipchangeling.net avatar

@drew @simon @hmaealdeza Yeah, especially if you want to have a verified account. Same is true of X and many dating services.

@changeling@mastodon.starshipchangeling.net avatar

@drew @simon @hmaealdeza Some do. I actually got the ID part fine. Then I had to do a live selfie wear your eyes have to follow these moving dots. Not only am I blind, i have nystagmus.

I’ve decided sites that offer identity verification and don’t have a way to complete it independently as a #blind person is the monster I’ll be hunting for the foreseeable. Their shit for making it that way and they're easy pickin’s.

I’ll never forget when my therapist asked me if I was frustrated. I explained to her that I am a disabled person living in a society designed for those who are able-bodied. Of course I’m frustrated. It’s worth noting she and I no longer see each other.

@mastoblind Since i’ve been posting so much about #A11y, i thought i'd put Suno AI to work and come up with this song about accessible PDF’s. Lyrics are in the video, typed lyrics available upon request.

That moment when you have a #JAWS #Tandem meeting ID and the last 2 letters are F U. #TechTeacherProblems.

I was today years old when I realized I didn't actually have to do all my work in Microsoft Word. I could use pandoc and write everything in Markdown and just convert it later. Mind, blown!

changeling,
@changeling@mastodon.starshipchangeling.net avatar

@liamerven It’s like when I discovered I could write things in Markdown and turn it into webpages.

I can’t speak for the population as a whole, but the reason i’m giving consideration to filing an aDA suit is because I sick and tired of getting the professional version of Go fuck yourself when i ask for assistance. Telling someone you can't verify their identity becvause your tech is inaccessible is as unacceptable in 2024 as being told you can't eat in a restaurant because your physical disability is making customers uncomfortable.

changeling,
@changeling@mastodon.starshipchangeling.net avatar

And to those who are #AbleBodied and feeling complaint fatigue from those of us who are #Disabled, we sympathize, and it's your damn fault. if you'd learned your lesson when a bunch of us got together to pass the ADA and started designing things to be accessible as part of the building process, we wouldn't have to keep having these exhausting conversations. Since you collectively haven’t learned, here are the take aways.

  • We want access to the world.
  • We're not going away. (1/2)

All right. Complaint has been filed with the DOJ. It was ridiculously easy as these things go.

changeling,
@changeling@mastodon.starshipchangeling.net avatar

Got an email from id.me this morning suggesting I find someone with sight to help me verify, or that I go in person to verify. I let them know their response was unacceptable, that I should have a way to verify online, that I was moving forward with my DOJ complaint and the best thing their company could do was prepare for that.

changeling,
@changeling@mastodon.starshipchangeling.net avatar

Ended up being able to complete the verification process and file taxes. I’m still going forward with my complaint because it is nowhere near accessible, but at least I met the deadline.

@changeling@mastodon.starshipchangeling.net avatar

I just did a post on #Bluesky pointing out that the #A11y issues that impact screen reader users it’s had since Day One and the message we're getting from their developers is we aren't welcome there. This is particularly interesting as more and more accounts from Twitter, all of which concerned with human rights in some way, are going over there. Blind people may be slowly bweing left in the dark, particularly for info surrounding #BIPOC, #LGBTQIA! and #PopCulture matters. (1/2)

changeling,
@changeling@mastodon.starshipchangeling.net avatar

@miki Respectfully disagree. The make a client that does what we want approach only works as long as the devs are okay with 3rd-party access. In the developing digital economy where users either watch ads or pay a subscription, the adaptation first approach offered by 3rd-party tools is going to be a dying breed. Companies will offer an A11y first approach just to preserve ad revenue if they’re smart.

Does anyone know how to negotiate dropdowns like the one found on https://fantastical.app/A11y/afs I’m having trouble choosing a meeting location. Thank you. I’m using VoiceOver on iOS. @mastoblind

changeling,
@changeling@mastodon.starshipchangeling.net avatar

@mastoblind @podcast In the meantime, I have done a responsible disclosure email to my office explaining the situation and asking visually impaired employees to reach out to me for assistance if they encounter trouble. I believe this problem is only temporary and this seems okay for the time being. #A11y
