This is insane. Sky News piece that applying the local results to a general, even though no-one in their right mind would ever do that. And therefore inferring Labour wouldnโ€™t win a majority at an election. Incoherent analysis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78-okMWdEVM

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@pixelscience The sad thing is that Sky can be measured and balanced when it comes to analysis. God knows how this got through the editorial process. Probably another facet of editors being bored with another โ€œLabour kicking bottomโ€ story and trying to fashion tension when there is none.

Ate some GF bread that wasnโ€™t hideous and I didnโ€™t even have to toast it. So now Iโ€™m waiting for some kind of allergic reaction. Fingers crossed that doesnโ€™t happen, because non-hideous bread would be a nice thing.

Hampshire is very Tory on average, so this is no surprise. But also, I abhor politicising PCCs. So I did vote in this election, but I was extremely close to a spoil your ballot moment. https://mastodon.social/@ukelections@mastodonapp.uk/112382598785261458

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@yesterzine Our council votes in thirds, and so thereโ€™s always something to vote for. I admit I would find it hard to maintain my 100% voting record if the PCC one was all I was heading out for.

Column! Sorry, Netflix: I donโ€™t want your โ€˜with advertsโ€™ plan โ€“ hereโ€™s why โ€ข https://www.stuff.tv/features/sorry-netflix-i-dont-want-your-with-adverts-plan-heres-why/

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@ravi We donโ€™t watch much TV these days, TBF. Netflix survives until June. But after that, I think itโ€™ll only be Apple TV (due to Apple One) and then one other service at a time.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@simonharper @ravi If youโ€™re on the old Basic plan in the UK (and some other territories), youโ€™ll soon be forcibly moved to the ads plan, unless you pay more for Standard. The same shit Disney+ pulled in the US. (In the UK, Disney+ retained a sort of middle ground HD option.)

Finished my day of corporate work. Needed to do something from a mag. Went to grab a drink. Got a great line in my head to kick off an entirely different article. Procrastinated from the thing I was supposed to be doing by writing the frame for the other piece, which Iโ€™ve just done a count on and discovered itโ€™s ~50% of what Iโ€™m supposed to file, and it all came out in about ten minutes. And it all works.

This isโ€ฆ good? I think?

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

Iโ€™m not sure other writers have this problem, but one thing Iโ€™ve never been able to shake is a nagging feeling that if I donโ€™t spend enough time on something, Iโ€™m somehow cheating the recipient out of their money, regardless of the quality of what I produce.

Of course, when youโ€™ve been doing this for 25+ years, people are paying for your experience โ€“ your ability to craft a story. My editors couldnโ€™t give the tiniest shit if I spend five hours or five minutes on a piece if itโ€™s good.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@medievalist Yep. Iโ€™d not really tied it to that, but of course itโ€™s the same thing. I wasnโ€™t educated in writing โ€“ I just fell into it. So I still live in the certainty that at some point, Iโ€™ll be โ€˜found outโ€™, as though 25 years of experience in the field is somehow worthless.

My wife, with slight exasperation, reminds me of this now and again. And then my brain resets and goes into anxiety mode. But what if THIS TIME they find me out?

Gah. Stupid brain.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf I have averages knocking around too โ€“ ideally, I donโ€™t want to spend more than X hours/days doing work Iโ€™m being paid ยฃY for. Even so, if I blaze through something and itโ€™s good, the nagging doubt creeps in.

Someone else responded that itโ€™s part of imposter syndrome, and that sounds about right. Close to a quarter century doing this stuff and still my brainโ€™s all โ€œYeah, but what if THIS TIME they find you out?โ€

Brains are weird. And not always helpful.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf I canโ€™t imagine a world in which I earned $200/hr. A couple of half days per week and youโ€™d be sorted.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf Freelancers donโ€™t get paid vacations nor things like parental leave. When the govt tried to โ€˜equaliseโ€™ the National Insurance Contributions, I wrote to my (Tory) MP, saying I thought this was a GREAT idea and adding that I assumed this would mean equal benefits for people like me, who got no paternity leave when my daughter was born. Alas, my timing was such that the policy was dropped before he replied, and he was all I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS.

@patrick_h_lauke @jonhicks @malarkey Totally backed up by the checks notes two Reform councillors England now has.

But, yes, thatโ€™s the only lesson the Tories will take from this. Be worse. Which will drag Labour and the Libs with them. Again.
