Which feels like a problem. Ken Segall has written about whether something is off about Apple ads, in terms of smarts.

Which I find surprising coming from anyone writing in this space. The intersection of tech and the liberal arts wasn’t supposed to be a crusher.

@craiggrannell I think the culture absolutely has changed in the last two years. I think a lot of artists have legitimate concerns about losing their livelihoods to AI tools.

Especially illustrators, who seem to be the iPad Pro’s ideal customer

@craiggrannell I don’t see the issue as critical replacing analogue, the vibe I’m getting is that AI is replacing creativity and that’s why the ad is uncomfortable

@craiggrannell To me anyway, it couldn’t be a more apt visual metaphor for how AI is taking decades of creativity and replacing artists with technology.

It’s while I don’t think the ad is catastrophic or anything, I am kind of amazed that no one inside Apple flagged this as a possible interpretation

Instead of saying that the iPad should dual boot macOS, you should be required to state the problem you’re trying to solve and explain why it can't be achieved with an App Store policy change, or missing API.

The problem with the iPad lineup:

iPad Mini:
Only good for content consumption and a Kindle is a better, cheaper e-reader

iPad:
awkward middle child, uses the Bad Apple Pencil

iPad Air:
a solid all rounder, but if you’re going to spend that much money, don't you want the nice display?

iPad Pro 11”:
a great device, but a little on the small side for drawing or using multiple windows

iPad Pro 13”:
if I’m going to spend €2000 to get a computer with a keyboard, why not just buy a MacBook

As someone who recently sold off their iPad Pro and got the cheapest iPad Air money could buy, I’m not even sure what Apple could do to tempt me to upgrade today.

ProMotion in the new Air might do it (I really, really don’t like 60Hz on iPadOS) and I think only a more capable Pro could get me to find the big bucks to get back to the Pro lifestyle.

New Pencil, keyboard, and camera location would be nice, but not sure they’d move the needle for me personally.
