@grimalkina @sue I think that the benefit that a platform like mastodon has over larger centralized corporate platforms relates to transparency. It is POSSIBLE to see which instances and people are blocking/defederating others. With human effort, it is possible to show cases of discrimination and cultivation of hateful environments. The core point stands: this doesn't happen automatically and it takes work and vigilance. But the problem with 'algorithms' is that they're effectively inscrutable.

This actually really connects to something I've been thinking about for a while. I grew up in a self described conservative household with libertarian leanings. I bought into the argument that smaller govs were 'better' because shifting things from the 'inefficient' federal gov to the more responsive state and local ones where you had a chance to actually influence policy.     If we take as a given that the original Lemmy developers are bad people, then even if the infrastructure they created is apolitical, using and popularizing it gives them soft power and visibility. And even if there are other instances run by good people, the original developers run the instance that most curious new people would start by looking at. That gives them the power to direct attention and traffic towards places that they or their friends control
