Alan Holdsworth’s guitar playing makes me slightly nauseated, something about the weird tight chorus and the harmonic choices just give me the heebie jeebies

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@SourceRolls he's somehow both amazing and truly terrible at music. I've never understood it and it is kind of a relief to hear it from someone else

When she's not shooting puppies and goats and lying about that, prominent liar Kristi Noem is embarrassing her publisher by lying about alleged meetings with world leaders like Kim Jong Un, which simply never happened. https://www.thedakotascout.com/p/gov-kristi-noems-account-of-meeting

@stevesilberman well, this is disappointing. I suppose next we'll learn she didn't really win the Nobel prize in physics.

Would you go see The Social Network 2?

Almost 15 years after the release of the movie The Social Network, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is reportedly working on a sequel that grapples with tensions between Facebook’s growth and its integrity.

“Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible.”

No, I'm not going to make fun of Trump for wearing diapers. Many disabled and elderly people do, including my late mother, who also had dementia. But I'm happy to point out all the other reasons why you shouldn't vote for a terrorist cult leader and rapist who packed SCOTUS with grifters and undoubtedly sold top-secret intel to the highest bidder while tens of thousands of Americans were dying of COVID because of his policies.

I don't know much about hair dye (except that a lot of y'all look cool) but I do know that a lot of Stuart Semple's Culture Hustle pigments are fucking amazing. And now he's working with something called Blunt to produce a line of colors together. I have no real way to judge but these are probably pretty great

mrcompletely,

@chris @Rosey @brucy he's a nice guy, or was. I ran his website from 96 until Mad House took it over around 99 (which was the right move). I haven't really listened him in recent decades but those were fun times. We had some great private party gigs and such

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@chris @Rosey @brucy I just knew him as "that guy you kinda remember from 90s dead show lots who plays a kind of Kottke/Hedges style" and thought it was fun he was making a living at it

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@chris @rowjimmy @Rosey @brucy yep he can actually match an idea, a lyric and a melody together which is more than you can say for most

@bourgwick @FateMusic @mrcompletely @dminches

This seems like the outcome here:

  • Jerrybase is NOT introducing any new "song" to represent the D/S section of the show.

  • @InstituteJerry thinks the way that section of the show is not coded correctly since variations are often not listed. But no one liked this suggested solution, so he is going to roll up a wooler and get over it.

Thanks for your input on the subject. :stealie:

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@InstituteJerry @bourgwick @FateMusic @dminches I support, strongly, adding annotations as needed. I'm sorry I haven't had time to assist with JB recently, and since I just got laid off, I'm hoping that time returns to me in coming days. However, if I do, there are probably a lot of potential things to spend time on. If you feel that this is worth your time immediately that's great, but I see it as something that could be refined over the course of years.

It may not seem like it now, but during their time, the were a groundbreaking act. Their willingness to cover rock songs and contemporary material was antithetical to the bluegrass gatekeepers of the time.

They also kept their day jobs. "Seldom Scene" was coined because at first they only played once a week and didn’t stray too far from their Washington D.C. home base.

Their influence on later bands and newgrass in general is undeniable.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@aburtch duffey really didn't get it and he alienated a lot of people with his crude jokes over the years. I genuinely think this was a limiting factor on their popularity bc he offended both religious folks on the trad side and anyone with feminist convictions on the progressive side. That aside they certainly were both excellent performers and important for the reasons you mention. The 1973 album was one of the great early newgrass signposts.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@aburtch oh they were smoking hot. There's something about their rhythm feel which I don't like quite as much as some of the other great newgrass bands but it's a matter of degree

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@rowjimmy @aburtch the world needs as many hot dobro players as it can get. Speaking of which does Mark Lavengood have a regular gig? That cat smokes

is moving to the model that Deadbase used for the Drum and Space section of shows.

They called it Drumz, we are going to call it "Drums and Space". Same thing though.

If you want to get a preview of what this will look like, we've deployed it to our test site.

https://test.jerrybase.com/songs/1693

Once we get it to the real site we will clean it up a bit, but you get the picture.

From our FAQ...

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@bourgwick @FateMusic @dminches @InstituteJerry now I want to just credit that list of people as the writer for every subsequent space segment

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@FateMusic @bourgwick @dminches @InstituteJerry in all seriousness, this work is in a context where much is undefined, ambiguity is common and much comes down to semantic interpretation. In that context, the official release publishing legalities strike me as one of few potentially solid foundations we could agree to respect - arguably all of them, but certainly those issued up through 1995. For this reason above all I believe that drums and space should be treated as separate entities.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Stoneycase @Rosey @bourgwick @InstituteJerry I'm watching heads.social signups, if he wants in he's in
