A lecture on Lorentz transformations? It's about time!

Time once again for the annual "you can wear shorts but not too short" email from the administration. Thanks, Puritans!

Check out this ๐ŸŽ‰ new preprint ๐ŸŽ‰ led by Princeton PhD student Hengrui Zhu. Numerical studies of nonlinearities in black hole ringdowns are getting very precise now! Thanks, pseudospectral methods ๐Ÿค“

A short technical noteโ€”of interest to folks working on black hole perturbation theory. I give conditions for a handy gauge choice to also freeze the location of the event horizon of a black hole.

๐ŸŽ‰ It's new paper day! ๐ŸŽ‰ But I didn't have any time to write any posts... Putting this here to make myself do it after class today. Meanwhile just check it out: https://arxiv.org/abs/2403.10278

Ok, one more Lorentz boost animation. In the previous two, I showed the time-slicing of future null infinity. But Lorentz boost also distort the spheres: "relativistic aberration". I love Penrose's static drawing (in next tweet), but what does it look like? This!

Penrose's drawing from Spinors and Spacetime, Vol. 1. The boost on the right is the same thing that's happening in the animation in the previous tweet. The sphere is really supposed to be the celestial sphere, but putting the world map on it makes it really easy to see aberration

Academics: What is your favorite tool for doing author clustering from literature [e.g. Author A writes papers that are often co-cited with papers by Author B]? I know there are a bunch out there.

Little joys of prepping for class: Looking at Lemaรฎtre's 1927 paper, which estimated Hโ‚€~625 km/s/Mpc, a full 2 years before Hubble's famous 1929 paper! https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1927ASSB...47...49L/abstract

BTW @johncarlosbaez what reference do you usually steer people toward for them to read about irreps arising from tensor products (plethysm?)?

duetosymmetry,
@duetosymmetry@mastodon.social avatar

@johncarlosbaez Thanks for the ref! Ok, I must have the terminology wrong. I am interested in the following question. I have two tensors, S and T, which I know live irreps labeled by lambda and mu. The question is which irreps appear in the decomposition of the tensor product SโŠ—T. What's the correct name for this?

duetosymmetry,
@duetosymmetry@mastodon.social avatar

@johncarlosbaez Oh yeah, that's it! I once even knew the names! It's a shame I never learned this stuff properly, and hence I don't remember it.
