It’s Labour’s turn to crash and burn as party can’t defend Elphicke’s defection

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/may/09/labour-crash-and-burn-party-cant-defend-natalie-elphicke-defection

Crace does nail much of the hypocrisy.

“That’s odd, observed Rajan. Because you forced Labour’s North of Tyne mayoral hopeful, Jamie Driscoll, out of the party for sharing a platform with Ken Loach. And Diane Abbott is still not allowed back in despite having apologised for her antisemitic remarks.”

Apple broke the law with anti-union tactics in NYC

https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/08/apples_antiunion_tactics_in_nyc/

Talking of Chameleons, I am always impressed by the way Apple have managed to maintain much of their ‘outside, liberal’ image - even when they dominate mobile markets. Jobs was a shite, indifferent to others in his company, family and community. The organisation maintains that process - with a ‘friendly face’.

I do use their hardware/software but am under no illusions about the company.

Port Talbot couple admit ‘dine and dash’ offences with £1,000 in unpaid bills

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/may/08/port-talbot-couple-admit-dine-and-dash-offences-with-1000-in-unpaid-bills

Now I must emphasise I am not ‘fat shaming’ - people's body size is their own affair, whether intentional or genetic and I would not comment on that. Other than to say, these ‘dine and dash’ ventures have probably reduced their abilities to dash…

JackTheCat, to random

The Labour party’s chair has defended the decision to admit a staunchly rightwing MP while Diane Abbott has remained suspended and under investigation for more than a year.

Anneliese Dodds said she believed Elphicke was a good fit for Labour because her remarks on border security and housing were “absolutely fundamental to the Labour party”.

But she refused to “go into detail” about why Abbott’s complaint process had taken more than year while Elphicke had been allowed into the party.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@JackTheCat I saw that when watching her interviewed on C4 (catchup, no licence). She managed to say that without blushing and without smiling….

Whatever you might think about Abbott, her treatment by Labour has been shameful and appalling. On par with the rest of the Starmer agenda I assume.

Natalie Elphicke is a hard-right Tory. Her defection sums up Labour’s contempt for progressive voters

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/may/08/natalie-elphicke-defect-labour-keir-starmer-conservatives

Jones makes more sense all the time. England has no choice, but I hope that voters in Scotland and Wales (NI is a different matter as Labour don't stand there) pay attention.

Labour are not and never have been our friends. A Scottish Labour, based in and caring for the country might be another matter. Not this group of junkies.

If Keir Starmer isn’t careful, Gaza could do for him what the Iraq war did for Blair

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/may/09/keir-starmer-gaza-iraq-war-tony-blair-muslim-voters-labour

'Many Muslim voters turned against Labour in the local elections, and the continuing conflict only heightens the risk of alienating others’

You do not need to be a Muslim to despise Labour's stance on Gaza which is combined with the very shady, opaque really, funding of Labour Friends of Israel.

I hope we will highlight these in their Scottish campaign.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

From the article

‘Labour policy on Gaza has unquestionably shifted to become more critical of Israel than it was in October. This week, David Lammy, spoke in the Commons against a Rafah offensive, in favour of an immediate ceasefire and for immediate aid to go in to Gaza;’

Yet they abused parliamentary processes to prevent the SNP motion being voted on.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@naefool Quite. Hence the collusion in their wrecking of the SNP motion (with the help of the Speaker who is still hoping for a coat of Vermine on his elevation). All to prevent Labour MPs voting…

Wen,
