if wrestling so far has made me ponder art, theater, desire, tradition, and accessibility, necro butcher vs samoa joe made me think about myself. i was entertained by this match. i thought samoa joe beating the everloving shit out of necro butcher was cool. as soon as the match ended, a spell was broken, and i immediately regarded myself with suspicion: why the fuck did i like this? then, something i often think as an autistic person: am i supposed to feel some other way about this?

after taking a few days to decide what my feelings about this match say about me, i've decided i'm just insatiably curious to see novel things happening with bodies. sometimes to a gross degree! and that is actually one of my greatest draws to wrestling so far. i have just never seen bodies doing anything like this.

so the chorus repeats after every match: wrestling is just absolutely not what i thought it was, and my girlfriend showing me wrestling absolutely fucking rules.

the 4th wrestling match my girlfriend showed me is one that she called (meaning she was one of the announcers). to respect her privacy, i won’t share what match, but what i took away from it is that she is very good at calling matches. it also reaffirmed some information i already knew: that she is a smart, funny, well-spoken woman with a quick wit. this was true ~15 years ago, it is true now, and it will still be true at the heat death of the universe

5th & 6th wrestling matches my girlfriend showed me: both sting vs. big van vader, two rivals who are INCREDIBLY well-suited to wrestle one another. sting is a wiry muscular quick good guy; vader is a huge wide strong bad guy. colette showed me their strap match at the superbrawl III, then starrcade 1992.

we also watched, perhaps most importantly, the “white castle of fear” WCW promo, which IMO, one can enjoy without any prior knowledge of wrestling or of this rivalry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufsbAC13F4I

if you’re not familiar with the sport, sting is kind of a huge deal. colette has been watching him since she was a kid, and she would have showed me these matches at some point because they’re just exemplary, she said. but the timing is what really made them special to me. this is because last week, she achieved something she’s been manifesting for years as a writer & wrestling critic: she landed an interview with sting, and that’s why she wanted to show me these matches now.
