i can imagine some kind of LRU cache being reasonably useful for this situation, assuming you have some latency hierarchy. For example if the desktop has an SSD, HDD, and some USB HDDs attached I can imagine you having a smaller cache that keeps more frequently accessed files on the SSD, followed by a bigger one on the internal HDD, and followed again by USB HDDs as the ultimate origin of the data. Or even just have the SSD as cache and everything else is origin. I don’t know if there’s software that would do this kind of thing already though.

You may want to consider zipping files for transfer though, especially if the transfer protocol is creating new tcp connections for every file.

I guess I should clarify that I’m not naive enough to think that this all started under Biden because history has inertia. Biden, having been VP before president and a Senator for many years before that certainly had an outsized contribution to the things that are happening now. The things that are in motion now are not going to be solved by Biden or Trump or really any of the entrenched political class in the west and pretending they are is just fooling yourself. They are too ideologically poisoned and are busy self destructing.

Trump is not to blame for the state of the law. The Democrats have had many chances over the years to protect the rights that the Republicans have said out loud, for decades, that they will remove. Time and time again they did not prioritize it. Biden was a senator and then vice president and then president during these opportunities.

He took the biggest action on climate change in US history; the goal of the climate bill is to put us on track for a 40% reduction in US emissions by 2030. It’s way too late but that’s clearly not Biden’s fault since he started fighting for it basically as soon as he got into office, and managed to achieve passed legislation which is several standard deviations above the norm for “let’s ignore it until we’re underwater and on fire” US politician status quo.

First of all having a goal isn’t the same thing as having an accomplishment. Second Biden was vice president and a senator for decades. Biden isn’t Mayo Pete who has only had a career long enough to fix bread prices in Canada.

one problem is cbp guards can unilaterally adjudicate visa status when the person is trying to enter the country. Other countries you get your visa and you basically have the right to be there, it doesn’t work that way for the USA. I believe US visas basically just get you on the flight. So all kinds of bullshit can happen if you’re not already in the country.
