FediThing, to random

Saying the Fediverse has to grow through centralisation is like saying a vegetarian restaurant has to grow by selling meat.

Alternatively, here's an analogy for car lovers: you want to drive somewhere quickly, do you just instantly press the pedal down as far as it will go? No, you have a look and see what's ahead, and occasionally slow down because you want to survive the journey. You will not get anywhere quickly if you crash.

Why be on the Fediverse if you want it centralised? What's the point? Why not just use one of the many, many centralised networks out there?

And why are there so many people arguing for growth at any cost? Have they not seen what this did to all centralised social networks?

havn,

@FediThing To me, the default signup button is closer to "should we allow non-vegitarians to eat out vegetarian meals?" than the example you're using.

If anything, I think some of the knee jerk reactions against it, is like saying "No matter the road conditions, we should drive in 5 mph - just in case."

havn,

@FediThing I agree that it's "centralisation" - I'm just not sure this is "problematic centralisation".

I think this post (not by me, we just have the same name 😅) summarises what I think well: https://blog.erlend.sh/fragmentations-in-the-fediverse

There's a difference between: "They should do it differently" (which I can agree with), and "EUGENE IS DESTROYING THE FEDIVERSE, AP AND THE WEB!", which I see way too much of.

  • havn,

@caiocgo I've been working on my website lately. And while I've found web searches (with https://kagi.com 👌🏻) the best when dealing with CSS (of which I have some knowledge), I've gotten great help from Bing on some basic Javascripts. I don't know it at all, so both getting it to create what I need or explaining code, has actually been helpful for a noob like myself. 🙂
