I added the Tank Mini to my lineup of Unihertz phones. It's a 4.3-inch rugged phone with a 5800 MAH battery. Feels downright pleasant to use. The Jelly Star is very noticeable in its smallness, but the Tank Mini feels like using a normal Android phone. It has 33 watt charging which, hilariously, is the fastest charging speed of any phone I've ever owned by quite a wide margin. It's not much more expensive than the Jelly Star, and might appeal to more people because of its larger screen and massive battery. It also has two multifunction buttons, and like the Jelly Star, it supports a second SIM or a micro SD card, and has a headphone jack and fingerprint reader. It also has a whopping 12 GB RAM, compared to the Jelly Star's 8 GB, and 256 GB of internal storage. Pretty sure it uses the same MediocreTech chip as the Jelly Star, but it feels responsive enough ... except when I scroll, of course.

@simon I’m curious, and excited I’ll see it soon. Because of course, I’ll visit Canada for the tech, not the person. Lol! Not really, but I’m sure you know that. 😛

@hmaealdeza Hey Hannah! How's it going? Hope you're fine! I happen to be a huge telephony enthusiast myself. A quick question: have you got any recordings connected to telephony you could share? Anything goes: dialing sequences, ringback, busy and other service tones; service announcements etc? We're hosting a small collection of this stuff here in Poland so if you would be interested, I could link to that. The closest I have ever come to Filipino telephony experience is dumping the firmware of a Cherry Mobile smartphone and ripping the brand ringtone. Thanks a lot in advance. Have a great day!

hmaealdeza,
@hmaealdeza@dragonscave.space avatar

@Piciok Oh, cool! I don't have or know any offhand, but I'll surely ask around. Other blind Filipino friends might know of a place where to get them.

It was a nice and very informative day at the Connections Museum. I’ve seen and experienced operating a switchboard,I saw some of the really antique telephones dating back to the 1800s, I’ve learned how panel switches, crossbar switches, and step switches work, experienced rotery dialing, and even got to use a blue box and old pay phones. The volunteers were really nice, and the tour was accessible. They even took us home.

hmaealdeza,

@Piciok It's in Seattle, Washington, where my friend is. I'm visiting right now. There are other telephone museums though, apparently. I just don't know where they are.

I haven’t realized how inconvenient it is to have a carrier-locked phone until weeks before going out of the country, and wanting to use just one phone for everything. So I went to my carrier’s store, hoping they’d let me pre-terminate my phone plan without having to pay too much. Having just renewed my plan last October, they want me to pay most of the price of the 15 Pro Max before they unlock the phone. Thankfully, the payment didn’t go through, because I’ve found a phone repair shop that unlocked it for approximately $60. That’s a lot less, compared to what my carrier is asking me to pay. So I went through with it, anxious at first that it’s a scam because a lot of them probably are. Thankfully, after 6 days, they called and informed me that my phone is unlocked. I’ve tested it using another provider’s sim, and it worked. What a relief! I don’t have to get a roaming package.

hmaealdeza,
@hmaealdeza@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon They shouldn’t be locking the phones. It’s not like I’d run away with an unpaid phone or plan. Sadly, some people do though.

simon, to random

In case you think you're having a bad accessibility day today, or you wonder how much things like the ADA actually matter, @hmaealdeza is currently locked out of the #1 payment app in the Philippines because they introduced a non-optional face verification, and randomly decided to log her out. The app asks you to take a selfie, but now requires you also look at the camera and blink at the right time.

hmaealdeza,
@hmaealdeza@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon @jscholes I also use it to pay some of my bills, and at least one of my cards can only be paid through them. For now, I’ve rated it 1 star on the App Store. I’m going to encourage blind people here to do it as well.

I’m so happy and thankful that I found a vet that does house calls. No need for me or my cats to be stressed because I don’t have to take them to a clinic. Home visits are very convenient. She’s very accommodating, patient, and pet/human-friendly. My cats almost immediately warmed up to her. And most importantly, she’s willing to work with me on coming up with more accessible ways of administering vitamins and meds, as a totally blind furparent. I wish there’s first-class service like this everywhere.

Today in the world of weird accessibility issues, @hmaealdeza told me that her Grab app (the Uber/Eats equivalent in parts of Asia) has stopped letting her see the top tabs with VoiceOver. Considering those tabs are for choosing between ride, food, and mart, that's kind of a big problem.
I still had the app from when I visited there, so I tried it. Turns out mine was also updated, but I could see the tabs without any issue. So I suggested she reinstall the app ... and against all common sense, the tabs came back (the very next day🎶).
I will think of this whenever support tells me to reinstall the app, and will probably take them more seriously going forward, because sometimes it just fixes things for no apparent reason.

hmaealdeza,
@hmaealdeza@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon More like the very next second. Lol! Thanks for suggesting to reinstall it. I thought of that as well, but decided against it as I didn’t think it made sense.

@jfayre @bmoore123 I’m interested in reading about it as well. Though I’ve just had my Jelly Star replaced on warranty, so I might ask @simon to do it first because I’m confident he can fix it if it breaks. Lol! But yes, a link would be aappreciated, if you have one you can share.

For those who have watched me torture my iPhone 13 for the last month, I'm happy to report that the battery capacity dropped to 80% yesterday, and I have an express replacement on the way. I started at 83% in mid-February, and have been recording 4K 60FPS video to drain the battery several times a day. It takes around 90 minutes to charge to 100% from USB C and about 2 hours to die completely, although sometimes the temperature makes the app crash. Despite reports of crashing apps, high temperatures, bad battery life and premature shutdowns (with 10-15% battery remaining), Apple wouldn't replace the battery under Apple Care until the battery got to 80%. So, I got it there. I played the stupid game and won the stupid prize.

I wish there’s a way on the BBC Sounds app or website to hide shows you don’t want to see. There was a horror drama I listened to long time ago that’s still available. And when I see it, I’m reminded of how awful it is, and how I will absolutely not recommend it.

hmaealdeza,
@hmaealdeza@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon One of the episodes has animal violence. Sounds very realistic, too. I never wanna hear it again. There’s content warning in the beginning, but I didn’t expect it’s that bad.

simon, to random

I've gotten to the point where only a small number of people call me, all of them have custom ringtones, and if the default ringtone plays, it's spam at least 90% of the time. I can't decide if this is a good thing or not.

hmaealdeza,
@hmaealdeza@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon I can see how having custom ringtones for people helps, especially if you're busy, for example. You can more easily decide to answer a call or not. Not sure how it works in Canada. If you're in the Philippines though, and you have bank accounts, cards, or a phone plan, you'd easily mistake people as spam when they call, since their phone systems use random numbers, and that means your default ringtone is going to ring.

hmaealdeza,
@hmaealdeza@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon I've never seen anything like that in my life. That's interesting, and cool at the same time. I wish our carriers alert us like that here, so not that many people get scammed.

hmaealdeza,
@hmaealdeza@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon I'd love a feature like that. Since selective blocking can't be done yet, I'd just silence the ringtone and won't answer, if my phone tells me it's likely spam or fraud.

Has anyone managed to successfully update the accessibility on the Zoom H1E? I am having major problems. Nothing seems to happen after I select "execute". Or specifically, the recorder seems to become unresponsive for around 1 minute, until it eventually says ... this. Whatever this is.

@simon I’m guessing it’s trying to say language, then done. Yikes! I’m so not looking forward to that process.

I just had the best ice cream ever. It was four ice cream flavors, combined into one dish. Not together, but mixed in so that you can eat a combination of flavors the way you like. The flavors were chocolate chip, which was sort of OK, the best version of vanilla I’ve ever had, rose, and the Indian version of nuts with cardamom.

hmaealdeza,

@ppatel Wait. Cardamom-flavored ice cream? Wow! Somehow, I can’t imagine that. I’ll take your word that it’s good, though.

I got a score of 111 on zany touch, which is kind of like Bopit, I dare anyone to try to exceed that. But here's the catch, can you do it in only one try? For those of you who don't know what Zany touch is, it's a game on iOS, it's kind of like Bopit. Except instead of bop, twist, and pull, you've got touch, swipe, and shake, among others. I have mine set to just those three.

hmaealdeza,
@hmaealdeza@dragonscave.space avatar

@Moopypoo Wait. Is that still being made for newer phones? I’d like to try to play it either on my iPhone or the Jelly Star.

@Moopypoo I have. It arrived yesterday. I’m so glad to have it back.
