Chinese Dissidents’ New Weapon Against Beijing: Sell-Out New York Comedy Shows by Shen Lu

"One of the hottest tickets on the New York comedy circuit is a monthly open-mic show conducted entirely in Mandarin by performers whose identities are sometimes hidden.

"Organized by a group of exiled women’s rights activists from China, the event has been running for about a year at clubs across the city, and invariably sells out"

"Chinese authorities track overseas dissidents and critics, and in some cases try to silence them by pressuring their relatives back home.
For that reason, some people perform with face masks when the media are present at the open-mic events"

"Photographing, filming and recording of performers aren’t allowed. Staff members clear media and social-media coverage requests with each performer and watch for suspicious behavior in the audience"

Elizabeth Shove's social practice theory work around comfort and convenience at demand energy center is really underrated in fourth order design circles (the whole "strategic" design, systems thinking, service design gang)

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

She divides practice into know-how, know-what, know-why

Know-how (procedures, techniques, skills, practices, habits of thinking)

Know-what (specific concepts, theories, material properties, genres, standards)

Know-why (underlying philosophies, narratives, norms, values, principles)

Her method enables you to ask how we can envision less energy resource routines around our comfort & convenience. It is so well suited for design coz instead of just critique it enables you to envision

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

So rather than making existing tech more energy efficient the focus becomes, how can we invent new routines and habits around our desires and needs for comfort or convenience which can be fulfilled with artifacts that demand less use of energy, resources, water, land to produce and consume.

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

i.e instead of focusing on making energy efficient tech to accommodate to our existing routines, envisioning less energy demanding routines and then designing tech to help adopt those routines

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

So there is a clear role of tech here too, but more of tech from this perspective 👇

Does anyone have any opinions on if it is still cheaper to get someone to bring me a laptop from the US vs buying it here in India? My current laptop is 11 years old and literally held together with packing tape.
Unsolicited advice welcome!

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

@AmbaAzaad Considering the build quality of laptops going down nowadays due to planned obsolescence good warranty, serviceability is a big deal now.

(and especially if you live in coastal areas with high humidity for example mumbai)

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

@AmbaAzaad ask your friend if they can get international warranty for your selected laptop model and if it would work here, if yes then go for it.

Need something like this

Interactive site which has catalogue of product category from every industry, sector but which is organised according to how it's used in multiple levels of social setting of an individual & across various needs, desires both for production and consumption

& Each product is reverse engineered, deconstructed, given an STS critique & proposes designs for making alternative open source appropriate tech & all that is stitched together as syllabus

doesn't need to be LLMed, can be used to visualize concepts across disciplines as nodes on a graph that teachers, students, researchers can use to find intersections
