Residential school denialists tried to dig up suspected unmarked graves in Kamloops, BC, report finds (www.cbc.ca)

Residential school deniers tried to dig up suspected unmarked grave sites at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, not believing a May 2021 announcement from the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc that as many as 215 Indigenous children had been buried there, according to a new report....

And everyone looks at the Germans for being weird about the Jewish Holocaust.

Both my parents were survivors of residential schools in the 40s and 50s. It happened, it was real, it was terrible.

The fact that idiots are out there denying it means that this history is continuing to happen today.

I don't think anything was really missing ... I think it will just take time. I never expected a quick switch from one platform to another for anyone ... I even had a hard time making the break from reddit to here. I love the mountains of content at reddit but the more I explore this side of the fence, the more I feel like I am starting over and I really don't mind that. This was the feeling I had when I started reddit ten years ago and I really don't mind going over it all again.

However, this time, I am a veteran poster and contributor ... I know more how to interact with people and be positive, stern, contribute positively and avoid getting entangled with others on messy topics. I didn't have that experience the first time around.

Lemmy and the fediverse has the benefit of gaining a userbase of veteran posters, lurkers and contributors who will be more capable of generating more useful content this time around. We all just want to talk, debate, discuss and share with one another ... we all like our cat videos and memes but I think a good portion of people just want to be able to talk about ideas and perspectives to stay informed with the rest of the world. And I think it will be those kinds of people that will slowly move onto platforms like this and slowly grow a new community of content on the internet.

People and their ideas and thoughts are the like the dandelions of the internet ... they'll grow anywhere they can and once they catch, they'll blossom into fields of flowers in no time. Corporate controls are like weed killers that try to manicure the landscape into pretty flowers, grasses and crops to be harvested into picture perfect, highly organized and controlled environments that maximize profits but in the end give no useful, healthy product ... I don't mind living on the gravel sideroad of progress with not enough soil, in the hot sun and not enough water ... give us time and we'll grow our roots deep into the soil and cover the land with our bountiful growth!

A bit concerning as TD Bank was flagged as falling or liable to fail along with the American banks that fell through.

I always say we won't know when banks fail until after they've fallen. When they do, poor guys like us will lose and the rich will have their wealth protected at all costs .... even if it means our savings

Both my parents attended residential school in the 40s and 50s. Dad went to St Anne's in Fort Albany and mom went south near Sudbury. Mom's experience was bad but not too terrible. Dad's was one of pure terror and torture and he never really admitted to anything until the last five years of his life in his 70s. The family asked him for detailed information to fill out forms to write a description of his experiences but it was so terrible for him that we were barely able to write a page of stuff. He was so angry, ashamed, sad and upset about it all ... we could only talk about it for so long before we had to stop. He got a settlement package and he could have asked for more because the stories that were shared by others that he went to school with were absolutely terrible ... but he didn't want to .. he said it was in the past, nothing can be done about it and he just wanted to forget it all. He said that the settlement was for his grandkids and that they could at least have that.

The most terrible thing about all this is in knowing my parents experience, knowing how terrorized they were and yet there are still people out there who absolutely don't believe it ... or dismiss it as the past and should be forgotten about. Dad did want to forget partly because he said that he didn't quite believe anyone would do anything about it all ... he was surprised when he received any kind of settlement.

It's terrible that this happened to my parents .... it continues to be terrible for my family because many people still disbelieve what happened to them.

At this point I think government, politicians and the public are still waiting for the body count to rise before they'll do anything serious about highway safety. Especially when it comes to criticizing the trucker lobby and moving more of our transported goods to rail rather than on roads.

I always joke with people when we start talking about the number of trucks on the road .... and wonder why we couldn't just take all those transport trailers, tie them all to one engine and give that vehicle its own dedicated road, maybe even a road made out of iron. Hmmmmmm. 🤔

It's the fear of change .... they enjoyed living in a world where they felt like they were at the top and that they could say, treat and act in certain negative ways towards 'others' that they considered lower or lesser than them.

The world is changing and everyone is beginning to realize that we all just want to equally enjoy life as we want without interfering with others.

Conservatives who feel that they are above everyone else are shaking at the knees thinking that they are actually losing their place in the world .... when in reality, no one really cared about what they thought in the first place.

The rhetoric of the right .... not wanting people to impose their beliefs on others by imposing their beliefs on others

ininewcrow,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

And the hopeful thing about that is that society as a whole is changing towards that direction. The thing we all have to keep in mind is that this is a very very gradual change and one that will come with a lot of growing pains. We are making our world one step better in this generation .... it's a small step but still a step ... the generation after us will hopefully take another step forward.

I always find that thought funny .... if your beliefs are so weak and flimsy that a simple painted crosswalk or a flag is enough to inflame your sensibilities or challenge your faith ... then your beliefs were never that strong to begin with.

ininewcrow,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

It goes to show how shallow and weak their faith can be ... just a small simple challenge to their beliefs is enough to shake their faith ... it goes to show how weak their faith actually was.

ininewcrow,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

Agreed .... my point is that right wing extreme views have a right to say what they want ... they just don't have the right to stop others from expressing their views for themselves. The cross walk was allowed to go through by young people in the community and many in the community supported it ... it was the right wing extremists who wanted to stop the crosswalk from being promoted or celebrated.

The difference between the left and the right is ... the left are willing to fight for the rights of everyone, including their opponents ... the right only want to fight for their own rights regardless of how it affects anyone else.

Think of what people had to live with 50 years ago .... 100 years ago ... all the conservative, backward ways of thought and belief back then ... we have progressed, as much as it doesn't look like it, we have progressed and continue to do so. The fact that you are thinking about it, addressing it and debating is a continued sign of progress. Stay well my friend.

It's getting insane inside conservative circles .... they were implying an alternate world before .... now they are living inside it

Ahow doodem ... it means 'greetings, my friend'

Neenaskoomin keena ochee .... 'all my hopes are for you'

I speak my Ojibway Cree dialect .. it was the first language I learned as a child

I don't know you but I would be more than happy to know you became a citizen of this country.

It isn't the millions of people that are causing the problems

It's about a dozen billionaires that are plugging up our economy and freedoms of millions of people

It's a constant rewriting and attempting to realign reality to their own personal agendas.

They always cry for freedom which they always had and continue to enjoy but believe that their ideas and feelings should be imposed into other people's platforms and places .... no matter how outlandish and dishonest they are.

You have a right to be a right wing conservative ..... you just don't have the full right to spread your ideas in other peoples houses or websites if they don't like what you say.

Absolutely terrible how society, especially our leadership, value finances, economy and money more than human life.

Government should do more for the weakest of society rather than constantly coddling the strongest and wealthiest land and property owners.

Right here with you and yes I am enjoying the small community as I know I am dealing with actual people instead of trying to figure out if something is automated or not.

The problem always seems to be that government and those in power always view these issues from an economic and financial perspective ... rather than as a humanitarian issue that just requires us to take care of one another.

Best example I've ever read or seen first hand is in what they did in Portugal.

Every other example in North America is basically the same ... they did half measures, expected results in weeks or months and never bothered to see what would happen in years or even lifetimes. Everyone always wants quick answers ... but no one ever wants to admit that social problems like this will take decades and lifetimes of support, work and assistance to see positive results.

There is no quick fix ... if there was, we would have used it and been successful by now.

We simultaneously want everything right now with no waiting ... and believe that we will also live forever.

About to take a buddy on his first camping trip, are there any things that I should keep in mind first time?

As the title says, one of my friends wants to go on a backpacking trip with me. Usually I like to be very spontaneous and sorta "rough it", which would definitely not be good for the guy. I planned out a nice flat-ish 30 km route for us where we can watch the sunrise and the sunset from an overlook. What are some things that I...

Shoes or boots ... ask them before the trip what kind of footwear they have and if they've tested them out yet.

I've gone rough camping lots with my family ... we're Indigenous in northern Ontario and one of the worst things when you get out there is bad footwear. I've also traveled to Europe and gone on lots of walking tours. I once took a trip with brand new shoes that I thought were a great idea and never wore them much before the trip ... bad idea as I discovered I didn't like the shoes during the trip.

Ask them about footwear and if they have new gear, tell them to try their stuff out first before heading out.

Also toilet paper .... always remind everyone about toilet paper.
