Join us in a couple of hours at 8pm Eastern tonight for an ETR/SBI presentation of a pair of DW Documentary videos. The first is "How car tires drive deforestation" and the second is "Why is a death squad from Bangladesh allowed to go on UN missions?"

She isn't going to want to fuck with an SBC or even a laptop. Just a ten foot interface with single remote control. That may end up being a smart TV. So, I think the answer might end up being:

"Fuck streaming services. Fuck 'em hard." :-(

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@swaggboi Heh, I am the one providing the TV (IF I do)... I keep a collection of dumb TVs handy for when I find people who need 'em. :blobcatpirate:

@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

A friend of mine has a dumb TV that she wishes to use to watch various "internet" based services like BritBox, YouTube, and Netflix. I suspect that an Android based "media player" box is the easiest way (without buying a television) for me to make that happen. She does not want to hook up a laptop to the TV and use it to play media.

Is there a better option than an Android box? And if not, what do I need to know about buying one of the many available boxes? One of my concerns is that at some point the lack of updates will force her to buy a new box. Is that a likely thing?

@kiefac Is it possible to setup a Chromecast device without installing an app on a phone? She does not have a smartphone, and there is no way I would install the Chromecast app on my phone.

While I am at it... is there a way to setup a Chromecast device without a Google account?

@bluestocking

> "cast" shows from her laptop or desktop

She doesn't want to cast anything. If it old her she could "cast", she'd have no idea what I am talking about. She just wants literally a ten foot interface with one remote. Even a laptop via HDMI is more than she wants. I suspect this project is doomed. :-(

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@bluestocking I should add that while this project may be doomed, it has at least taught me that the reason crappy corporations like Samsung are able to sell so many units (despite being bad for consumers) is because they give the user who wants zero knowledge a portal to the content they want. :-(

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@bluestocking I guess what I am bumping up against is the fact that I simply don't want to give her smart TV functionality, but she can't watch the content she wants without it. Ugh! The content landscape today is just awful.

I have this personality quirk where it's incredibly difficult for me to not be mean to people in suits and people on golf courses. I'm consistently talking shit in my head. Just now a dude walked by and I had to take a bite of food to stop myself from saying "this dude has his best clown suit on today!"

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@specter I don't wanna tell ya how to live your life, but adding cops, business executives, and actual clowns to the list of people to be mean to... is something you may wish to consider.

Note that despite popular beliefs, you cannot desensitize yourself to poison ivy by chewing leaves or being injected with commercially prepared extracts.

More lies from big pharma!!

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@swaggboi Lucky for me, I do not seem to be affected by poison ivy. Well, just walking through it, not eating it. Wild parsnip on the other hand gave me a nasty burn. :-(

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@swaggboi Yeah man, wild parsnip (the invasive species from Europe) is a bitch. Do an image search for "wild parsnip burn", it is pretty shitty. I got it on my arm a few years back.

As for poison ivy, I'm just like a goat. :-)

I've been using systemd as an email client for a while, but now I am officially using dillo as my init system, and systemd as my browser on my daily driver. Now I just have to figure out how to send a bitcoin payment to pay my rent.

jmhorner,

@swaggboi I'm pretty sure there is an apt-get purge in there somewhere.

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@swaggboi Now that I think of it... the only time I seem to use AppArmor is immediately following an hour of me yelling "Why the fuck isn't this working!?!?"

  • AppArmor (disable for now)

I'd also like to tip my hat at Turdpress, that is a favourite of mine.

are there any good tablets that aren't made by psychopaths or is it still that way?

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@eletious Part of me feels like that is the wrong question. I was feeling the same way about phones last year when @specter suggested I look in to GrapheneOS, which I did... and haven't looked back. I like a lot of the upsides of GrapheneOS, but one of the downsides is that it only supports Google Pixel devices (including Pixel Tablet). Anyways, I think all I am saying is that it MAY be helpful to start with deciding what applications you want to run, finding an OS that you like and which can run those apps, and then choosing a tablet from the OSs supported devices. Boy, I kind of took the long way around on that one. :blobcatlaugh:

I used to run the dnscrypt.ca DNS resolvers on ULayer VPSs right up until they stopped hosting in Canada. After some hunting around I eventually landed at inet.ws with a single resolver. Today I received this email from them and I think these are pretty cool features. This hosting company is working out quite well for me and I think anyone who is considering getting a VPS should give them a look.
