Watching the Leonids meteor shower while you're observing is pretty exciting 🔭

I've been asked an interesting question yesterday that stumbled me first and made me think: which do I like most?

There are certain topics that draw me in: Asian art, ancient history (and art), everything art nouveau & symbolism, old Dutch masters, design, Jewish stories, etc.

But what I like most is to learn something interesting and fascinating about something I did not know I was interested in before. To get my eyes opened to something.

How would you answer the question?

justtheletteru,

@vicgrinberg I REALLY like small regional historical museums, those that teach me about the history of the (small) town or city that I don't usually get elsewhere. Each one is unique, and they let me appreciate wherever I'm visiting that much more.

I do love British English spelling, but "disc" just looks wrong, my brain can't deal with it 🙄

(How often this word shows up? Constantly. Given how I am working on accretion processes in black holes & neutron stars ...)

justtheletteru,

@vicgrinberg I gave up distinguishing between gray and grey and use them as my heart desires 🙃

I was just showing these new data to our team yesterday. Apparently they've already been making the round on X, so I might as well share my own version:

Left: HST F814W filter; Right: RBG image in 3 JWST filters. I lack the skills to make it pretty but check out the southern component! 1/4

First try to BWI from SNA failed this morning due to a last-minute planned diversion to DEN (for refueling?!) that would make me miss my connection at ORD. Now on my way to LAX for a second try - will my red-eye flight be able to take off? Dun dun dun...

Arrived at Caltech bright and early today for two days of , kicked off by Tommaso Treu! Excited to celebrate RSE while learning about the cosmic dawn and beyond

https://sites.astro.caltech.edu/rse70/home.html

justtheletteru,

Dan Stark discusses Lya bubbles and shows off awesome JADES spectra for high z galaxies. Hard ionizing spectra appear common in bursts; related to globular cluster formation? (I miss these DEIMOS log sheet!)

justtheletteru,

Alice Shapley walks us through the history of building up our understanding of z = 2-9 "cosmic breakfast" galaxies

image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

A nice overview of many of JADES' results of spectroscopically confirmed early galaxies from Brant Robertson - have faith!

justtheletteru,

Guido Roberts-Borsani shares with RSE mutual interests over love for US/CA, football, and first galaxies

image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Masami Ouchi covers galaxy evolution and mass-metallity relation from z = 0-13 and 10^10

image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Mengtao Tang presented JWST spectra of z = 7-9 LAEs in ionized bubbles

image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Tucker Jones presented work on chemical abundance from z = 0 - 8+, so I won't be the only person talking about z = 0 at this conference! (Also, +1 for FIR probe!)

justtheletteru,

Amy Barger finds a decline in dust content at higher redshifts from ALMA+SCUBA+JWST work

image/jpeg
image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Bob Kirshner advocated for using IR SN Ia for cosmology, and gave update on TMT

image/jpeg
image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Andy Howell discusses super-chandras and asked Chatgpt to summarize RSE's contribution to SN science

image/jpeg
image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Andrew Benson presents DM halos of galaxies, including lots of impressive results from postdocs and students

image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

James Taylor shows observed DM densities consistent with simulations though may be slightly deviated from DM only sims, and there's potentially excess high densities at small radii

image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Ray Carlberg discusses CDM vs WDM vs stellar streams; maybe just stick with _DM

image/jpeg
image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Michael Turner kicks off the second day of talking about the 3 paradigms of cosmology: WDM, LCDM, and RSE's homework for the next 70 years

image/jpeg
image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Phil Hopkins explains the tension in Luv between models and e.g. recent JWST results with ISM physics like burstiness and other factors; high-z SMBHs might require both large seed and breaking of Edd limits to explain formation

justtheletteru,

Kevin Bundy discusses the relationship between halo mass and stellar mass for manga galaxies, and shows the legendary surfboard picture

image/jpeg
image/jpeg
image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Bob Abraham shows off Dragonfly's capability to pick up faint surface brightness features and a special line mapper is in the works, would be an incredible IFU

justtheletteru,

Drew Newman describes the z ~ 2 IGM tomography showing that LAEs and LBGs are non-cospatial; MIRMOS will be a super MOSFIRE

image/jpeg

justtheletteru,

Bahram Mobasher describes using Self Organizing Maps on SEDs to help fill in gaps in photo-z, using AI to recover space-quality images from ground-based ones, and to predict missing fluxes in multiband surveys

justtheletteru,

(And then I gave my talk of z ~ 0 sources that I couldn't live tweet but here are a couple slides advertising the work of our GOALS collaboration😅)
