I’ve got a fat pipe (ffnar) to the house, so I figure I should really save my cash, stop self hosting everything on remote VPS’s, and get myself a little Linux machine with a load of disc space that can sit in my office.

So I bought a Firebat T8 off Ali Express. N100. 16G Ram. 512G disc.

IT IS FUCKING TIIIIINY

I'll probably stop self hosting Masto and migrate somewhere, but my Nextcloud/PiHole/Source Control etc should all run fine on that. Just need to find somewhere to back it up to, probably B2?

@stevelord iirc it’s an Intel N100, 3ghz. 16G Ram. 512G. I’m strapping on a couple of TB SSDs for Perforce and maybe a bit for Nextcloud. I think it’ll do better than the Pi5, and it cost less.

@sinbad yeah, I used to run it back when I was on a Mac. Probably won't put my NAS on it, but the Perforce repo needs to go off-site. Just looking at their Linux support...

@nivrig I think it'll just be a PiHole, Nextcloud (for shared calendar with my SO), Perforce & maybe a Git repo. Maybe move my blog over to it, as well...

I have a gig symetric here, so I might as well use it and stop sending cash to Digital Ocean/Hetzner. It's all personal, low traffic stuff, (unless I decide to clone the repo to a laptop from somewhere) so easy enough to secure.

@glc I use Hetzner for my perforce and web servers, my Nextcloud instance is on an DO droplet, but it's self maintained. Tbh, it's dead simple now; click a button once a month.

@stevelord @glc yup, wifi built in. Linux picked it up straight away.

I was going to replace the framework motherboard with an AMD one, and use that, but this is stupidly cheap and idles at 6w or something. It's surprisingly nippy.

Took a while, but PiHole, Nextcloud, Perforce, Git and some web stuff's moved over to the Firebat, duplicity's backing up (I think, should have setup a systemd timer instead of a cron job) and the domains have been moved over to afraid.org. Wahey!

Cats been a bit under the weather the last few days. Vet thinks she has a tumour. Don’t think we’re gonna put the old girl through surgery or chemo, prolly better for her to have a couple of months without any stress and plenty of strokes.
