kennismigrant,

If you have an iPhone you can go ahead and try Flight Mode right now. You’ll see that it disconnects from WiFi and disables cellular. NFC, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi stay powered on, Bluetooth stays active. Yes, latest iOS has Bluetooth tracking protection on by default (varies by country, illegal in some), but it is not completely safe. I’m not sure about NFC and Wi-Fi. If you power the phone off it is unlikely to turn off the radios - they are needed for “find my iPhone” and similar features on Google and Samsung Galaxy phones.

Overall you can’t be confident that your phone does not reveal your location and identity to “law enforcement”, especially in places where police is well equipped to track you.

kennismigrant,

And they don’t need that, they can just arrest you

I run faster than cunts in riot gear. I wouldn’t be typing this otherwise.

kennismigrant,
kennismigrant,

Thou shalt roll back first, even if thou knowest not the root cause

and make everything so worse your angels won’t dare ack the alert. Forget not about stateful systems!

kennismigrant,

Oh, I should’ve mentioned the location. I’m not talking about the US.

It is widely used by tech people and people from Eastern Europe and Middle East. Effectively everyone I know from Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Turkey and India use it.

Question to those not in the USA, and who have lived outside the USA.

I’ve been thinking about something and want to check an assumption I have. I only hear directly from other people in the USA, and interract with the global community through memes. How are the gun regulations/laws different from yours in terms of strictness, and do you wish there was more or less where you live?...

kennismigrant,

Several Dutch people told me that firearms are common on ships under the Dutch flag. Given the number of people owning sea-worthy vessels this might be interesting. Do you know anything about this?

kennismigrant, (edited )

Boring fact: it’s also “sit like a Turk” or “sit the Turkish way” in Russian (сидеть по-турецки).

Now I’m curious what they say in Turkish.

UPD: me and @TheGreenGolem are referring to the Lotus position which is what it is called in Turkish.

kennismigrant,

Well, I still don’t see how it does not rhyme.

Watch it Dutchie

😒 Even though I am a slim 2-meter tall blonde blue-eyed rude narcissistic guy with a strong Dutch accent living in Amsterdam, eating sandwiches for lunch, even though I can ride a bike and skipper a ship in any weather with equal ease, and I do enjoy making fun of Brits, I am not Dutch. I also drink more tea than you do :P

kennismigrant,

Yay vocaroo! Can someone record the same phrase in British?

kennismigrant,

the part without

The red lanes are the bicycle lanes.

kennismigrant,

NL here. Which city and which library are you talking about?

kennismigrant,

I myself am failing all 3 atm. To add on top of that, I prefer to sleep a lot and I do not own any board games.

kennismigrant,

On a related note, can someone recommend a place in A’dam to buy an over-the-shoulder bag? One that can fit a laptop and won’t slip all the time?

Languages in the EU

I’m about to sound like the ignorant American I am, so I apologize in advance! We’re looking at a trip to Germany, and possibly Prague, and we’ve noticed that a lot of the hotel names are French and a couple hotels that aren’t named in French have replied to comments with things like “Bonjour! etc etc” What’s up...

kennismigrant,

Highly depends on where the shop is based.

True. I have mostly lived in touristy and immigrant-friendly places, and I’m OK with people not seeing me as a local.

kennismigrant,

people will still be like ‘wtf’ haha

People here (North Holland) are used to tourists and immigrants. A local could use “Hi”, “Hallo”, “Bonjour” or “Shalom” instead of Dutch-specific “Goeiemorgen”/other. If I say “Moin” or “Ciao” or “Hola”, people will understand and sometimes reply appropriately, but likely continue in English not Dutch. It’s something anyone would do for fun.

“hyvää huomenta” and “terve” on the other hand are not widely known to be a greeting. “tesekkuler” will not work as “merci”. I don’t do that.

kennismigrant,

spelt how it’s pronounced though

I’m not sure you meant this as a joke but it is funny.

Learning yet another irregular pronunciation because some N-hundred years ago their majesty Shithead von Cunt wanted to sound fancy and everyone just played along is not funny.

cries, not knowing how to properly pronounce most English words

kennismigrant,

the whole Internet

It will not affect the whole Internet. American-centered English-speaking “Internet” yes, but there’s lots and lots of infrastructure and content elsewhere. Many Chinese-, Japanese-, Russian-, and German-centric resources exist almost independently from the rest of the world. Some of them are free to completely ignore the “bad internet bills”, copyright, IP, GDPR, and any other regulation you can think of.

kennismigrant,

There’s some wisdom in the old soviet anecdote

There’s freedom of speech in the USSR: In the USA, you can stand in front of the White House in Washington, DC, and yell, “Down with Ronald Reagan,” and you will not be punished. Equally, you can also stand in Red Square in Moscow and yell, “Down with Ronald Reagan,” and you will not be punished.

The Internet is still mostly connected, the law enforcement is not as much. Many businesses exist only because of this. You are free to host (produce, store, distribute) your content where it is legal and access it from where it is not. Access to foreign resources may eventually be outlawed or the access itself restricted. This is already the case in EU, Russia, China, etc. - but for now Internet is mostly connected.

kennismigrant,

You can use !musicvideos@lemmy.world to refer to communities. This generates links to the community through the viewer’s instance, like so: !musicvideos .

kennismigrant,

My mental adblock is so aggressive I had to search for photos from my city to see if there are any billboards or other sorts of ads. It turns out there are strict regulations in place, and only a few ads are allowed on the streets.

kennismigrant,

ask for consent before detecting whether you have an adblocker, according to EU law

do you have any reference for this?
