Heat-set inserts are pretty cool, but you would be missing out if you're not trying what the woodworkers have in stock!

@layers looks at a pro delta printer from France.

It's... interesting.

And don't get any ideas - that's a baguette he printed.

@3DPrintingDad to be fair, the form factor does lend itself to all sorts of items in that shape

Working on the new logo design for @marlinfirmware. What do you think?

layers,
@layers@fosstodon.org avatar

@thinkyhead @marlinfirmware colors and layout are pretty cool, but the font kerning could use a little work. Love the accidental Debian logo easteregg in the eye 😁

Cheap 3D printers are getting good, good 3D printers are getting cheap. But, uh, there's a limit, apparently...

There was something fishy going on with my initial review results of the E3D Revo Roto, and it was all pointing towards Trinamic's Stealth Chop drivers limiting its performance. But is this Trinamic's fault or did E3D mess up the design of the Revo Roto while trying to get it as small as possible? Well, this one includes quite a bit of exploration, so let's dig in!

Do you even need threaded inserts? Let’s test CNC Kitchen's threaded inserts against no-name alternatives, or even no inserts at all!

Inspired by the design of the SpaceX Dragon capsule, I set out to mold its shape into a highly functional subwoofer, made with eco-friendly materials!

Not sure where that little speck of plastic came from, but it sure did get the MK4's filament sensor stuck pretty good.
While the analog hall-effect sensor used in the sensor is set up so that it could be used for real-time filament diameter compensation in the future, I feel like there might be simpler and more robust solutions available to simply check for filament presence.

@goeland86 true. Perhaps it would even be enough to just have a slightly more open geometry at the ball seat that encourages debris to fall out of the sensor.

The Prusa Mini now also comes with an Input Shaping preview firmware - time to test it and check if the final IS version on the MK4 has improved from its underwhelming results when I first reviewed it!

ive been meaning to ask @layers how his DIY home battery storage has held up over the years

layers,
@layers@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mobile_dom well, you're welcome to ask anytime!

layers,
@layers@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mobile_dom so, it's not anymore running in the original DC-coupled configuration in a server like I showed in the video, but I instead tried AC-coupled to the house. However, at this point, I would not recommend DIYing, but instead just getting a Victron + Pylontech combo set. They're much less work, safer, more reliable, perform better and cost the same as building things yourself, even if you manage to get DIYable cells at absolute bottom dollar.

@layers@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mobile_dom already have a buddy running a Multiplus 3000 and will be installing a 5000 for my dad pretty soon. Yes, they're not cheap, but they are amazing flexible, and compared to the SMA system I'm running here they're actually great value.

For the Europeans out there: In the US, VFD spindles to don't work on a GFCI circuit. I know that Euro circuits typically have ground fault built in at the breaker, unlike the US. Are VFD spindles still a problem with home circuit breakers in Europe?

layers,
@layers@fosstodon.org avatar

@DreadMakerAdam standard single-phase, as it's being rectified anyway and only rated for 1kW peak.
