So I was helping someone set up a new hand-me-down iPhone. This iPhone has been erased, but previously used our home WiFi. It is at the “hello” screen with the language prompt state.

And yet.

It shows album art on the “hello” screen for the current music being played on the nearest Homepod in the room. I used another device to change the track and it updated with new art.

What is this witchcraft — and why?!

Genuine pedantic question: why is Daylight Saving Time ending when entering Winter, when Winter is the season with sparse daylight, and therefore when daylight actually needs “saving”?

Is it possible to write Swift code that compiles cleanly, shows no memory issues during static analysis, or while running with the Leaks template in Instruments, and yet still leaks memory at a rate of about 1 MB/minute? And do it in 66 lines of code (including comments)?

@chockenberry it’s Swift code interfacing with inherently unsafe C APIs. It’s clearly a bad bug, but I wouldn’t call it a Swift bug — here it just provides a convenient escape hatch to interface with C APIs

Tomorrow I'll wake up, eat breakfast, then jump into a tram to head to Albert Park with my son, where we'll spend the day watching Aussie V8s, Formula 3s, Formula 2s, Formula 1s (duh), and two Aerial Displays 🇦🇺
But the thing I'm most excited about? A Benetton B200 will be doing a few laps. There's nothing like the sound of a screaming V10 doing 15,000 RPMs to remind you this sport is completely insane 🏎️

I still remember walking to work one morning in 2018, miles away from the track, and wondering what the thunderous noise in the distance was.
“Surely that can’t be it" I thought. Nah, turns out it was absolutely it. One single vintage Minardi on track, doing warmup laps. Bloody hell.

And now that my son is old enough to tag along, it'll be really hard for me to have a good spot at Turn 13 (now Turn 11) where you're so close to the track that you can almost feel turbochargers suck the air out of your lungs.

@jeffkibuule depends on the track I guess. Albert Park has lots of activities all around, including on track, the ground pass is relatively cheap and allows you to walk anywhere and see the race from different spots, very close to the action.
The Vegas track may be similar!

@cjwirth I wasn’t here 10 years ago, but I can definitely imagine it has gotten trendier since then — the whole corridor is packed with cafes, bakeries, record shops, tattoo parlours, bars, pop-ups, breweries, etc, while still retaining some of the old Italian pastry shops, Greek social clubs, op shops, etc.
But it’s getting gentrified fast.
