Question for

Has "dafuq!?" / “dafuck!?” worked its way into the common vernacular enough at this point for it to NOT be cultural appropriation when my white ass uses it?

Because… that's a damn good word. It beautifully expresses SO MUCH of my lived experience.

Just stumbled across someone here whose name is "Egg Embry" and my 🏳️‍⚧️ ass read that as

"egg‡ enby" as in, a trans person who hasn't come out and is also non-binary.

🤦‍♀️

‡ eggs are either folks who are trans who haven't realized it yet, or just haven't left the safety of acting cis.

🤦‍♀️ why does the idea of telling someone you have an invisible disability like autism feel equivalent to telling a family member you're queer⁉️

WTF is wrong with our society⁉️

Someone mentioned being at a friends house & their watch warning them about loud env (>90dB) from friends dogs barking.

This is my life 2x a day. Our young dog CAN NOT CONTAIN HIMSELF as I prepare their meal. It takes like 3 mins to prepare. 🤦‍♀️😿 We've been trying to quiet this behavior for 3 years.

Unfortunately, I'm @actuallyautistic & that constant high stimulus first thing in the morning WILL send me into autistic shutdown.

I've taken to wearing shooting muffs.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

Before I dug into what it meant to be
@actuallyautistic
self-care like wearing those muffs would be something I would avoid because society pushes us to "suck it up" or "not be dramatic" or whatever because "normal" people don't need that.

This is one of the reasons I think its SO important for us to help the undiagnosed autistic folks around us to go take a test. https://embrace-autism.com/autism-tests/

Embracing it means learning to take care of your needs, regardless of society's norms.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@actuallyautistic Also, by "outing" ourselves as autistic and speaking about it to them without stigma helps to normalize the idea. Helps them to see us as real people.

Of course, some people are bigoted abelist ass-holes so obviously some care must be taken with outing yourself.

I can't get excited about this Kickstarter update at all, because it 100% feels like

We got sick of sitting around for years while Backerkit took all the money we left on the table.

So, we copied all their stuff.

the thing about better surveys is just fucking insulting, because that's been a major problem for creators for years & they just KEPT ignoring it despite it being pretty damn easy to fix.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

the kickstarter "here's our new 💩" announcement video was still open in my browser and I hadn't finished it, so i tried and I'm just getting more upset the more I watch.

SO MANY THINGS are just like "🖕 fuck you. you've been refusing to give creators that FOR YEARS and then you're like 'look how great we are'. No. Fuck you. You made creators deal with TERRIBLE tools FOR YEARS and have the gaul to not even acknowledge that your 🐄💩 is why they turned to BackerKit?"

TIL you can set a "Social preview" for your repo.

It's under settings, and setting one should make the preview of your repo not be completely useless when you link to it on sites like this.

Let's try it out...

[edit...uh. I'm just seeing the normal default preview. Please fill in poll in reply]

this post is a reply to a post with a link to a repo.

That repo has a "Social Preview" image set.

Do you see the default GitHub repo preview there or a screenshot of an app?

TIL that Herman Miller has made a "for-realzies" gaming chair. As opposed to the “let's change the color of the Embody” and call it a gaming chair.

https://www.logitechg.com/en-us/products/gaming-furniture/vantum-gaming-chair.html

Wifey & think of ergonomics as a form of insurance. Invest in the good stuff now, so that you don't need to see a doctor later.

Our Embody chairs have absolutely proven their worth over the years.

I am a naturally loud person. Not just volume, though, I am usually either talking to myself, to the dogs, singing something, or having echolalia with a nearby appliance.

On the occasions where I become aware of the fact that I am currently being loud my mind always harkens back to a moment in The Crying Game where Forest Whitaker is telling the story of the scorpion and the frog. The last line is “I can’t hept it. It’s in my nature.”

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

Sidenote: holy shit The Crying Game is an amazing movie. Great writing. Great casting. Great acting. Great directing.

It’s been ages since I’ve seen it, but so many parts of it live rent free in my mind.

Side side note: it what is nominated for six Oscars and won one for Best Writing.

It also won 21 other awards .

You should definitely see it. Just know that it is not a light film.

I've just pushed a bunch of changes for screen readers to the main branch of FediThready. ( It makes long texts into post sized chunks)

I've run through it with and it seems ok. HOWEVER it all feels like it's "usable" instead of "good".

If there's a geek out there who uses screen readers regularly I would REALLY appreciate some suggestions on how to make this actually feel good for folks who rely on screen readers.

https://github.com/masukomi/fedithready

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@talksina the chunks automatically regenerate whenever you change / update the text.

Questions I'd like help with:

how do I best help folks to know that there are chunks being generated as they type into the field?

What's the clearest way to indicate that there's a section to type in, and a section to copy chunks from.

How do I let you know you should proceed to the second section after you're done typing?

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@talksina ANY feedback you can provide is really appreciated. I'll do my best to incorporate it.

Thanks 🙇‍♀️

Last night i left a little rant about how 's lack of explanations for anything made it impossible to derive when or why you'd use some observable rules AND that it made it impossible to know if it the sentence was correct or an AI generated fuck-up.

It was Perfect fodder for "reply guys", but instead 2 folks showed why i love They stepped up helped. One dug out a helpful link, another explained things in detail that took time.

Thanks Esperanto folks. 🙇‍♀️

is really good for practice. But sadly, they removed their grammar material back in 2023.

The theory is that you should learn by example, like you did when you were a baby.

But of course, adults don't learn the way babies do.

As a language newsletter I get mentioned, grammar is a way to hack the adult brain.

Most languages have forums on reddit, discord, or even lemmy.

Some people even use AI (like chat-gpt, co-pilot) to explain what is wrong with an answer.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@number6 Yeah, i've got lots of resources where i can get help. There's a subreddit and a stack exchange for Esperanto & probably many mailing lists and other things. There's even an esperanto mastodon host ( https://esperanto.masto.host )

My concern is more that it's not JUST missing key information, but that I ALSO don't trust that it's giving me valid examples anymore. Without the grammar material i have no way to confirm or deny any of my suspicions without going elsewhere.

I'm seriously thinking about quitting Duolingo, because the more advanced the conjugations get the less clue i have what the fuck is going on because they literally Never explain Anything.

Ex. In "el" means "from" & "de" means "of"

I came FROM the United States
Mi venis EL Usono.

The House OF Usher
La domo DE Usher.

and yet, it's insisting that when you go FROM France to Germany it's

...DE Francio al Germanio

and that EL Franco is definitely wrong.

WHY?!

@jrdnzr @masukomi
Also once you've got the basics of grammar from Lernu and are actually at the stage of being able to read Esperanto, there is PMEG
https://bertilow.com/pmeg/

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@HighlandLawyer @jrdnzr I had 100% forgotten that the PMEG existed. When I first encountered it I didn't have enough vocabulary.

Just glanced at it now and it seems I have enough to muddle through & get the missing words from context. :D Yay learning. 🎉
