I feel like people mistake YouTube for a video hosting solution.

But that’s not the point.

  • YouTube a huge archive of content that accumulated over the past 17 years.
  • YouTube is a content suggestion machine. Discoverability is a key aspect.
  • YouTube sets an incentive by allowing people to monetize their content.
  • …

So, if the only thing you’re looking for is a video hosting solution, then, yes, PeerTube might be an alternative. In the same way uploading videos to your own webspace would be, and Vimeo also still exists.

But for all the other stuff, YT is, unfortunately, unmatched, and probably will be for a while …

For whatever reason, many of the editors mentioned here never worked for me … like OpenShot, ShotCut or PiTiVi were really unstable the last time I tried (might be a distro or DE thing). Also I found it hard to cut precisely when they worked. Lightworks, Da Vinci, Cinelerra, I had a hard time getting them to run. Maybe that changed in the meantime.

I ultimately stuck with Kdenlive, which is stable enough and allows for reasonably precise cutting.

Hehe, back in the days I was in a similar situation, and I gave a harddisk to a friend who had a more powerful PC, so he could cross-compile everything onto the harddisk. Sneaker-network compilation …

Is there any way to reverse degrowth of the niche communities on Lemmy?

Like others, I came over when Reddit was banning 3rd party apps. Many communities were being started and I wanted to help. So I chose one community to form here and try and grow. And we did! There was a time a short while in the little KC Chiefs community was in the top 100 communities on Lemmy world. I knew that wouldn’t last...

Well, but that basically means I’d have to rely on different platforms if I want to post and discuss, say, niche music that’d just be buried immediately in the usual “popular” music communities (that often have a slightly rockist slant).

Even on reddit, the ambient music or IDM communities are fairly small.

Hmm I get your point, but on the other hand, I suppose nowadays many people are just used to look for a niche community … and finding it. So it’s not a huge surprise if the first reaction is disappointment when you don’t find anything like it or just an empty community.

Yes, well, by playing with the code and modifying it live (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_coding) … so, not in the sense that you let the code run on its own and it generates the music (even though I sometimes do that as well).

As some people have pointed out, it protects the liver, but from personal experience, I can’t confirm the “not getting drunk” part … so I’d be really cautious about blanket statements as the one in the title of this post.

WTF WTB? Warum verbauen deutsche Fahrradhersteller diese Reifen in ansonsten alltagstauglichen Gravelbikes, obwohl sie keinerlei Pannenschutz haben?

Meine erste Ausfahrt mit dem neuen Gravelrad sollte nur durch halb Bielefeld gehen, endete aber mit einem Platten im Hinterrad, der fast zu einem Sturz in der letzten Kurve geführt hätte.

Einen durch Glassplitter verursachten Platten hatte ich in den letzten 20 Jahren nicht mehr, und ich fahre fast jeden Tag. Und das nicht immer mit Marathon-Reifen. Selbst Rennradreifen wie die GP4 haben einen besseren Pannenschutz als die WTB #Riddler.

Laut Hersteller werden die WTB verbaut, weil die cool kids in den USA auch damit fahren. Wenn ich aber ein Gravelrad mit kompletter Straßenausrüstung kaufe, erwarte ich, dass ihm die Glassplitter nichts ausmachen, die mir auf dem Weg zur Arbeit immer wieder unterkommen. Dass es Dornen und Metall widersteht, erwarte ich gar nicht.

Schwerer als die Panaracer? Hab’ vor kurzem Panaracer Gravelking Slicks aufgezogen und so geflucht wie selten nicht … ich glaube ich hatte noch nie solche Probleme, 'nen Reifen auf die Felge zu kriegen …

Bin ja gespannt, aber ich könnte mir vorstellen das es nicht viel schlimmer als die althergebrachten Kopfsteinpflaster-Passagen wird? Die werden ja auch mit den normalen Rädern befahren, oder irre ich mich da?

Hmm they are rated for 12V to 32V, and the seller recommends using a toroidal transformer to achieve the symmetric power it needs.

Well, it says to use a toroidal transformer between 12V to 32V output, and looking at pictures of other people who bought it, it seems to work on AC directly, so I have high confidence that that’s what it is.

The idea is to have an 8-channel power amplifier in one box …

I still have to source the right trafo, but one large one would be both lighter and cheaper (new) than, say 4 small ones. An argument to use multiple would potentially be that peaks on individual channels might have less impact on the other channels. Still working on it …

Naja, im Haus kann ich die Fenster zumachen und die Luftfilter anschmeissen, das hält die Feinstaubbelastung niedriger.

Ansonsten belastet der Feinstaub bei Anstrengung halt stärker, und um aus der Stadt rauszukommen muss ich erstmal 'nen Berg rauf. Insgesamt sind die positiven Effekte wahrscheinlich trotzdem noch grösser, wie ein anderer Kommentator anmerkte. Aber ich merke schon gelegentlich den Unterschied in den Lungen.

Leider zieht die die schlechte Luft ziemlich tief in’s Land … aber ja, hab auch schon öfters darüber nachgedacht … wenn mich irgendwann etwas hier wegtreibt, ist’s wahrscheinlich die schlechte Luft.

Ja, denke mir auch oft das “sich Sorgen machen” wohl die grösste gesundheitliche Gefahr darstellt. Leider eine jener Dinge, die man schwer loswird.

Yes, and not just that … like, making sure to keep the cursor away from the images all the time because hovering over an image immediately plays some trailer including audio.

Generally, playing media elements without explicit triggers by the user is annoying, but this is the worst.

Hab’ mir nun sowohl OpenTracks+OSM Dashboard und FitoTrack angeschaut.

Meine subjektiven Eindrücke:

FitoTrack:

  • hat die bessere Karten-Integration
  • Kalorienverbrauch-Zähler ist wahrscheinlich eher mit Vorsicht zu genießen, aber trotzdem irgendwie cool …
  • Manche Diagramme find’ ich nicht so hilfreich (z.B. das Geschwindigkeits-Histogramm).

OpenTracks + OSM Dashboard:

  • Statistiken sind übersichtlicher gestaltet (i.e. die kombinierten Geschwindigkeits/Höhenmeter Diagramme)
  • etwas ansprechendere UI

Sonstiges:

Ein Nachteil an FitoTracks (der wohl in der nächsten Version behoben wird, das Ticket ist schon geschlossen) ist zudem, das Pausenzeiten aus importierten GPX-Dateien, z.B. von WikiLoc, nicht beachtet werden, was wiederum Auswirkungen auf die durchschnittliche Geschwindigkeit hat.

Bei beiden würde ich mir wünschen, das man “Glitches” besser ausbügeln könnte (i.e. hab’ ich eine Tour von WikiLoc importiert, und die maximale Geschwindigkeit wird als 106Km/h angezeigt … die hab ich ganz gewiss nicht erreicht :D )

Insgesamt beides sehr coole Apps, mal schaun’ welche ich langfristig nutzen werde …
