It is a slow news day for US political bloggers, so we turn our attention elsewhere, and lo! The Center for the Study of Public Domain does not let us down:

https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2024/

It’s mostly a list of media that will enter public domain, which includes the Steamboat Willy version of Micky Mouse, a lot of the Marx Brothers works, early jazz recordings and so on.

You and I, and everyone else, can now re-publish or re-purpose these works, sample from them, and extend them.

Winnie-the-Pooh recently became public domain and I think we’ve all seen the memes and I’ve even noticed that someone made a slasher movie. It’s a field day for creatives.

The fetus-fondling Gawd-Botherers in New Hampshire are proposing an abortion ban at 15 DAYS, and a woman might not even be pregnant yet:

Four Republican legislators in New Hampshire will introduce a bill that would ban abortion at “15 days” gestational age, according to a copy of the bill they prefiled.

The bill, which is unlikely to pass, amounts to an outright abortion ban. Gestational age is calculated from the first day of the woman’s period; at 15 days gestational age, a fertilized egg — if it exists yet — has most likely not implanted in the uterine wall. Implantation is the point when pregnancy begins, according to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Doctors often estimate that women ovulate around two weeks after their period begins — at about 14 days gestational age — and fertilization is thought to occur shortly afterward, though these times vary. A fertilized egg is nonviable until it implants on the uterine wall, which is thought to typically occur a week or more after fertilization.

[…] “I believe life begins at conception,” [State Rep. John Sellers, a Republican co-sponsor of the bill] said, pointing to fertilization.

…so this is effectively an outright ban. Though it doesn’t say the word contraception, it is likely ending that, too.

https://mps110.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/donald-duck-nazi.gif?w=640Donald Duck knows a Nazi when he sees one.

This Axios-like Smart Brevity™ is from the AP morning email thingie:

Former President Donald Trump declined to rule out abusing power if he returns to the White House after Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity asked him Tuesday to respond to growing Democratic criticism of his rhetoric. The GOP presidential front-runner has talked about targeting his rivals and vowed to seek retribution if he wins a second term for what he argues are politically motivated prosecutions against him. Read more.

Why this matters:

  • Trump’s campaign rhetoric and sweeping plans for a second term alarmed Democrats. It has become a chief election argument for Biden as he prepares for a potential rematch. At a series of fundraisers Tuesday, Biden warned that Trump and his allies are out to destroy democratic institutions.
  • Trump has been dominating his rivals both nationally and in Iowa, which will kick off the election with its caucuses on Jan. 15. As these rivals gather this evening at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa for the fourth GOP debate, he once again will not be participating. The GOP front-runner will instead spend the evening at a Florida fundraiser.

It’s not hypothetical, he’s DIRECTLY saying his plan is retribution. Actually he’s bragging, per Tiger Beat on the Potomac (thanks Charlie!) morning email thingie:

As if on cue, Trump leaned in on the notion that his second term would constitute a revenge tour. At a Fox News town hall in Davenport, Iowa, host SEAN HANNITY tried to get Trump to play down the very concerns Biden was raising.

Did Trump have “any plans whatsoever, if reelected president, to abuse power? To break the law? To use the government to go after people?” he asked. Trump deflected.

Hannity tried again: “You are promising America tonight, you would never abuse this power as retribution against anybody?”

“Except for Day 1,” Trump replied. He added later, “This guy [Hannity], he says, ‘You’re not going to be a dictator, are you? I said, ‘No, no, no — other than Day 1.’”

“Except for day one.”

For years Our Failed Political Press ™ has excused him by saying to take TFG seriously but not literally. They need to take him seriously AND literally, as do the rest of us.

Two stories, essentially one cause: both Lions Gate Entertainment and Apple are not advertising on Space Karen’s social media platform. At least for the time being, they have joined IBM.

There probably will be more companies pulling out.

Guys –

Terrible news this morning, OG blogger Zandar Versus The Stupid has left us, and gone on to the Big Re-Blog in the Sky.

I admired his work so very much and I linked to ZVTS pretty much every time I curated Mike’s Blog Round-Up at Crooks and Liars. His work was that good, his eye for the important story (which is not always the big story) was superb. I feel at a loss for words, and you know how rare that is.

Zandar was ever-present but kept his identity strictly secret, better than most. To the best of my knowledge he was not a Scissorhead (except in spirit). His last requests were for everyone to vote, and that’s the mark of a great blogger.

Rest in Power, ZVTS, you will be missed.

Rgds,

TG

I guess he wanted to spend more time with his super-hawt lingerie model Christian girlfriend (she’s from Canada, you don’t know her). NBC News has the deets:

“I think the voters, who are the most remarkable people on the planet, have been really clear that they’re telling me: not now.”

“Not ever,” the most remarkable people on the planet yelled. “Never!”

OK, so that the last of the obvious theocrats in the 2024 Goat Rodeo. Maybe Pence and Scott can find solace in Jeebus’ arms, together, if you know what I mean and I think you do.
