natebluehooves,

It’s just the problem that was brought up has been a solved issue for quite a while. It’s cool if they didn’t know though, i can see the redesigned big picture mode isn’t well advertised.

natebluehooves,

Yeah, we just started hearing about this recently. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have no problem with us moving the announcements channel somewhere else. My main complaint with matrix is that only a vocal minority uses it at the moment, and hosting yet another service before we have our house in order is a bad move anyways.

We use private groups on TG currently for the mod/admin live chats, and I personally can’t ever fully uninstall because it’s my primary point of contact with my parents who live out of state. I already got them to jump ship from SMS for higher quality picture uploads, but I don’t think they would care enough about this to change again.

Once I get our storage and infrastructure in general into a state where I don’t have to babysit it I will likely revisit running a matrix instance, but it won’t likely be our primary status channel. I feel we need to prioritize ease of access to get announcements in front of as many eyes as possible.

Also this is rich coming from me in the middle of an episode of insomnia, but please get some rest if it’s anywhere near as late as it is here!

(Posted under wrong comment, moved it here. Don’t lemmy at 3am folks.)

natebluehooves,

Second bit i missed: not actually against an rss feed. May bother crash about it and see if we can just embed an rss feed into the status page proper. Maybe try to make a simple system to simulcast announcements to two places at once if we need to.

Maybe rss for announcements, and an official matrix channel for discussion? We currently use reactions on the announcements to gauge how everyone is handling our responses.

natebluehooves,

That’s pretty cool, but honestly our storage situation is a tire fire that needs fixing and I have too many other projects I am neglecting right now. Depression sucks >.>

Plus, honestly the last thing i need is another attempt to unify all my communications that ends up needing to be babysat. I only get a few hours of motivation per day, and running pawb.social commonly monopolizes that time.

natebluehooves,

Steam support usually makes exceptions for situations like this.

natebluehooves,

As far as we can tell that was never an order or anything. The CMs seem to be cracking under pressure.

natebluehooves,

Edit: never mind. Reading your other comments it occurs to me you really are that obtuse.

natebluehooves,

As someone else in another thread pointed out, the helldivers IP is owned by sony. They may have no choice.

natebluehooves,

Is this a meme? I hear people saying this on lemmy and my brain refuses to internalize that there are people who do not preheat their ovens.

natebluehooves,

Yeah, audio and video workloads really need the ram. The base model is fine for content consumption though.

natebluehooves,

The problem is the electrical resistance of the socket. Most of the performance on apple silicon is achieved through extremely high bandwidth, low latency memory. Unfortunately that necessitates a socketless design at the moment, and you can see that happening on the snapdragon X too.

natebluehooves,

I have long given up on the thought if getting everyone to accept me. I grew up in texas. I am not trans, but I have chosen to start presenting more feminine.

This will be a very fun christmas when I visit because I have gotten to the point of no longer valuing any of that negativity. It turns out when you are an adult you can just say “that’s a shit opinion you shouldn’t share” and move on!

It’s especially effective if you don’t even let it affect your tone. Being cheerful and being myself seems to infuriate my mother in a way that makes her show her ass, so I’ll just let her do that.

natebluehooves,

If you give that response, the other commenter vaporizes. Fascinating!

Why is nobody able to admit when someone has a point anymore? Learning and collaboration should be the point of the internet.

natebluehooves,

My hisense google tv connected to an open wifi network and updated without being told to. The update broke CEC and hdmi arc. I cannot adequately express my rage at this moment.

Apple (slrpnk.net)

I don’t care if anyone has a Xiaomi, Oneplus, Samsung, etc. Each brand is using a modified version of Android, and they chose to be compatible with each other. But for example the “blue vs green bubble” drama is a thing specifically because of Apple locking their unsuspecting users into a closed ecosystem. And it sure...

natebluehooves,

Exactly. As an iphone user (and linux sysadmin, compartmentalization is bot that hard), i agree with your criticisms of apple most of the time. They just make the better phone IMHO, and I say that as a nexus 4, nexus 6p, pixel XL, oneplus 7 pro, and oneplus 9 pro user. Yes i used custom roms, no I do not have the patience to treat my phone as a linux project anymore.

I regularly have android users go out of their way to try and fight me over this, and they always claim I must not have used android. It’s annoying to field over and over.

natebluehooves,

A lot of it comes down to software. I had a cpu performance scaling bug that meant my oneplus 7 pro would occasionally take ~5 seconds after unlock to stop being clocked at 100mhz. It made the unlock experience really laggy and crappy. It felt cheap and lazy.

natebluehooves,

But the implementation is often a bit more stable or user friendly. Those features often do not light the world on fire because the user experience is not there yet, and google moves on too fast to finish the feature.

Why I left Startrek.website, created TenForward, and the admin abuse I've suffered from ST.W since then

tl;dr The admins of Startrek.website are censoring users, have been harassing me across multiple websites, and have tried to convince the admins of other instances to ban me because I didn’t remove comments that were critical of them on TenForward which I only made in turn because the mod of Risa was doing whatever he wanted...

natebluehooves,

As the co-owner of another instance, this kind of admin/mod behavior is distressingly common. I get that administration is hard, but I swear a lot of moderators are addicted to the kind of drama they are supposed to be preventing.

If you ever need a bit of a safe haven in the future pawb.social is the instance we run, and having followed your content for quite a while back on risa and now on tenforward I can say nothing you post has ever been a problem with our rules thus far.

I really do hope some of this dies down for your sake!

natebluehooves,

Local hardware horse here!

To elaborate a bit, the storage replicas will span three physical servers in realtime, all of which get snapshots hourly in case we need a rollback, and full backups weekly to a fourth system on mechanical drives with 2-disk failure tolerance. This should mean that data loss requires 4 simultaneous system failures.

We have a tape library for automated tape backups, but can’t afford a drive upgrade just yet to make it make sense. The drives are often several thousand dollars, but the tape media is cheap.

Offsite backups are currently in the works, though if anyone has recommendations I would love to add them to our list for consideration.

If anyone has additional questions or suggestions I would be happy to answer tomorrow!

natebluehooves,

Correct! to give a bit of background while I wait for backups…

last night we had what appears to be an out of memory error. Our cloudflare tunnels broke around the same time that the internet went out (probably related), and we also didn’t have our nodes configured to keep some ram reserved to allow kubernetes to keep running. Additionally, we still only had 1 replica of the data for furry.engineer and pawb.fun that we were still building/downloading from other instances (mostly cached images).

so it was the perfect storm. node 1 runs out of memory and basically crashes, node 2 then tries to pick up the services that are suddenly offline, immediately causing it to run out of memory and crash. There’s only one copy of the data, so nothing offline to check for corruption against. all the storage with 2 replicas was unaffected.

I’ve done an announcement post on the telegram channel to try and keep people appraised, but this restore is going to take another couple hours probably because I’m trying not to repeat my mistakes by setting things to 1 replica or skipping backups for expediency. My impatience pretty directly caused this issue.

natebluehooves,

Lessons do stick around when you have to learn the hard way!

natebluehooves,

Actually yes. Recovery was slow and painful, but I have policies in place to handle these failures now. I’m sure we will find another failure mode as we go forward!

natebluehooves,

Also that account is BRAND NEW, as in less than a day.

natebluehooves,

I saw this house if it’s in texas around austin! I was seriously considering using the fridge nook as a little server rack closet by finishing the front and making it extend to the ceiling for a vent.
