So far there are no major problems. Disk was filling up but probably unrelated. I guess beehaw grew a lot more in terms of percentage than lemmy.ml during this time.
The main things I can think of which might help are to increase database pool size (in config file) and number of federation workers (/admin). Also create a swapfile if you are running low on RAM.
hey folks, here's another meta-post. this one isn't specifically in response to the massive surge of users, but the surge is fortuitously timed because i've been intending to give a good idea of what our financial stability is like. as a reminder, we're 100%-user funded. everything you donate to us specifically goes to the...
Digitalocean is pretty expensive. For example on hetzner.com you can get 8 vCPU for 15 euros per month. OVH should be similar. So thats really affordable if you have hundreds or thousands of users and a couple of donors.
I created /c/tiki and I want to pin the welcome post. But when I click on the "..." for the post, I just get the standard buttons, no mod options. What gives?
Bad gateway is probably because there are so many users now. About the missing mod actions I suggest you open an issue (or maybe there is already one).
Something I made quite extensive use of back on Reddit was the ability to wrap related subreddits into a single multireddit, which I could then browse as I wanted....
It's definitely a major feature which requires changes to most parts of the code. So maybe a week or two for the initial implementation (or more if you are unfamiliar with the stack). I don't think these multilemmys would have to federate at all, so you don't have to know anything about Activitypub.
I have a question about communities. Are communities server-specific, for example, is the "Gaming" community on lemmy.ml different from the one on, say, beehaw.org and will I need to join both?
So I realized that lemmygrad must be banned in beehaw's instance list, but I can still see beehaw user comments in lemmy.ml communities, if I respond to them can they see my comment?
I want to develop custom front end for Lemmy. I've compiled and run a local version of backend but when I started front end it was not able to connect to websocket....
Make sure to checkout a tag like 0.17.2 in both repos. We are currently removing websocket support, so its already gone from the backend. In the frontend this is not finished yet.

How does lemmy.ml handle the Reddit hug of death?
I'm the sysadmin for beehaw.org and our user-base has almost tripled in 24 hours. Our site has been crashing so much over this time period....
500 Server Error?
Hi guys - I keep getting 500 Server Error. Is this because the server is getting overwhelmed? Too many new users?
