I recently joined my local library so I can borrow audio books for free via Libby and my podcasts have really taken a hit in the last few days.

In related news, Becky Chambers’ “Monk and Robot” series is really lovely.

This part of the Strand in London used to be a congested road for cars. Now it’s a magnetic place for people.

Good trade.

It can feel hard to muster the vision and leadership needed for smart urban change. But it pays off with a better city. Gorgeous pic by @livinglondonhis

@BrentToderian Alt text: A photo looking down a long, wide street, flanked by Georgian buildings. The centre of the street is dominated by a row of mature trees and a large, curved, raised planter full of leafy green plants and with seating space all around the edge. The sun is shining and there are dozens of pedestrians walking by and people sitting around relaxing in the car-free atmosphere.

I should never watch screen adaptations of books I love. Dune is probably the exception to that. But finished 3 Body Problem yesterday and haven’t felt that disappointed since Ender’s Game.

@markboulton @peterme @apolaine Netflix adaptations seem to have this recurring problem of trying to jam everything into too few episodes. Presumably it’s some combination of the limited budgets, short production schedules and a lack of faith in Netflix not to immediately cancel it if season 1 isn’t a mega-hit.

Just learned that Apple Music on the PlayStation only shuffles the first 100 tracks of any playlist unless you manually scroll all the way to the end each time to force it to load the rest.

What the actual fuck, Apple? That’s so bad!

Not me talking about the systemic problems of capitalism in a work retro again.

Sometimes people will respond to anarchism by asking “how would anarchists stop the strong or charismatic from taking over” and I look at the people who actually do rule our world and think “do we live on the same planet?”

Edit: I should have been so much clearer than I was. I mean that the people who rule us are neither strong nor charismatic, nor particularly smart or otherwise capable at all. Elon Musk? Seriously? We’re not in the situation we’re in because we’re ruled by strong, charismatic people.

paddyduke,
@paddyduke@mastodon.social avatar

@HeavenlyPossum Sure it sounds better, but what if some of our current problems aren’t immediately and permanently solved with neat answers? What then? Checkmate!

Our HP printer is easily the worst piece of tech I’ve ever owned. I can’t imagine paying them a monthly subscription for that garbage. Will anyone actually fall for this?

Shout out to the person near my house who’s absolutely blasting Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Time After Time’ from their car at a deafening volume. Excellent choice!

Opt-in search on Mastodon has a big downside for me, in that the people most likely to opt in to appearing in searches are often the people whose posts I find the least useful or interesting.

Searches surface a lot of would-be 'influencers' who treat Mastodon like it's Twitter or Linkedin, where posts are for marketing or clout, not for conversation.

paddyduke,
@paddyduke@mastodon.social avatar

On a tangent, I increasingly find myself treating Mastodon like a kind of expanded group chat, rather than as a public forum.

It's nicer that way.

I wish I could set an expiry on all posts in my RSS feed. Most things I follow post way more often than I can keep up with and the hundreds of unread posts eventually just puts me off opening my feed reader entirely.

It’s my email inbox all over again.

My plea to everyone who makes websites: stop putting sticky, auto-playing videos over the content of every page.

What user need is being met by forcing me to pause and hide a video about the word ‘perambulator’ on every page when I’m trying to look up synonyms for another word?

Or an interview with a musician I’ve don’t know when I’m trying to look up someone else’s lyrics?

Who is this for? What’s the point of it other than to annoy visitors so much they give up and leave?

paddyduke, to random
@paddyduke@mastodon.social avatar

@ivory This might be a niche feature request, but I’d love a way to expand all content warnings inside the current thread.

For example, (@)pluralistic@mamot.fr often tags threads with CWs and I need to click on each post Individually to expand them.

I still want the content warnings in my timeline, but being able to reveal a whole thread at once would be awesome.

paddyduke,
@paddyduke@mastodon.social avatar

@ivory Oh cool! Is it a setting or a default behaviour?

I think most the times I encounter it it’s usually the same CWs applied to all posts in a thread.

paddyduke,
@paddyduke@mastodon.social avatar

@ivory Actually, a correction to what I just said. Sometimes they are numbered, so “Long thread / 1 of 18” kinda thing. That’ll be why they didn’t all expand.

Please just say what it’s actually made from.

Slack has basically replaced email for me. Not in a useful, "everything that was an email is now a Slack message" way, but in a "Slack monopolises my communication bandwidth so much that I never remember to check my email any more" kinda way.

But email inboxes are such an absolute nightmare of unsolicited garbage and pointless notifications that I think I'm still probably coming out on top.
