If you know the railway network in a region already covered by the rather well, I’d be delighted if you would “well, actually” the hell out of it.

@szescstopni I’m currently working on Poland. I’m at line 212 right now, so it’s going to be maybe two months until I have all the current PLK lines and then the fun with all the former lines starts. Stay tuned, I guess …

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

I could fly to Dublin in less than two hours (net). I could do the trip with fast trains and boats in a day.

Or I can stick to slow trains and take three days.

Either way, the journey starts here. And now.

partim,

Extremely rapid, clearly. They even have frickin’ cavalry.

Nine thirty on a Sunday night and the pedestrian streets are buzzing with life. It’d be tumbleweed in Germany.

Meanwhile, the last train is at 22:09 – Lille Flandres first picture, Lille Europe second. Curiously, all three final trains are to Belgium (that Ouigo to Tourcoing stops for alighting only).

Departure board, listing a 21h35 Eurostar to London, a 22h09 TGV to Brussels, a 07h24 TGV to Marseille, 07h52 to Rennes, 08h02 to Strasbourg, 08h49 to Paris, and 09h01 to Montpellier.

Good Whit Monday morning from Lille where I realised ten minutes before departure that I could take a detour via Calais instead of waiting for the direct trip starting at eleven. Good thing I picked a hotel right across from the station.

I’m being rewarded for this tomfoolery with a lovely old fashioned consist. It’s quite long. Looks like they are expecting to be busy later today.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@jon I’ve only seen two-carriage double-decker EMUs so far, so I assumed they would run this service, too. But I did miss the Calais train last night because it was at least 90 minutes late (and everyone squeezed into the Dunkerque train that was only half an hour late).

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

Oh, so French conductors can read the Interrail QR code, just not the platform gates. (Or maybe they fixed that by now?)

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@schnedan As platform roofs go, this one isn’t too bad. Lick of paint and it’s as good as new. (They surely will wait until bits are actually falling off, though.)

I’d love to have a closer look at Calais, but Mme. Horaire is a cruel and unforgiving mistress.

@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@patrick I’ll probably take a boat from here some day, just out of principle.

partim,

@smveerman @jon Just looking at pictures, it seems that the VR2N are the nicer carriages, though? V2N appears very cramped from the outside.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@smveerman @jon Oh, right. Forgot about the 2+3 seating – wasn’t an issue this morning.

255 kilometres to Paris.

Good thing I went this way. In Rang-du-Fliers-Verton the train switches to diesel – which means my map is wrong.

After not having any time in Calais, I now have two-and-a-half hours in Amiens. If the city is only half as quirky as the railway station, that might turn out to be a good thing.

partim,
@partim@social.tchncs.de avatar

@vorortanleiter Ja.

Happiness. I can now reveal that I was stupid and left my iPad in the bus from Toledo to Madrid two weeks ago (on a Saturday). I followed it in Find My and saw that it returned to Toledo and stayed there. I went there the following day, but of course the ticket office wasn’t open on Sundays and even if I saw it was some metres away I couldn’t get it... I eventually got a reply from that they do have it there and I can fetch it on a weekday so here I am now and yes I got it back. Whew.

@tml Never ever put anything in the little net in the seatback before you is the lesson I learnt a long time ago after having to track an iPod together with some very lovely folks at Lufthansa.
