It's never been a better time to switch to Firefox on Android (www.androidpolice.com)

The final push to start using Firefox over Chrome on Android might finally be thanks to the enormous selection of add-ons (Firefox’s version of extensions) coming out next month. Chrome doesn’t offer native support for extensions in its mobile app. Also, better security.

peterg75,

Been using FF on almy devices for over a year now. Best.Browser.Ever.

peterg75,

Don’t know if that’s an option for you, but I but laptop parts on Amazon…

peterg75,

Same! My 80+ year old dad has been using Mint for years now. All he needs is a browser to check his bank account, read news, go on Facebook. Mint just works!

peterg75,

If you want to use desktop shortcuts, you’re better off using KDE Plasma, Cinnamon, Budgie, or XFCE as your desktop environment. Good thing in Linux is that you can install several DEs alongside each other.

peterg75,

I run EndeavourOS with KDE. For VPN, I use SurfShark which do we have a GUI for Linux installable via AUR (Arch User Repositories). Steam works pretty good too.

peterg75,

SurfShark does work on Android as well. The speed hasn’t been an issue for me either. My daughter routinely streams shows over it to get other countries’ Netflix selections.

peterg75,

Also, I must add this: PopOS! Is a good product for sure, but it’s based on Ubuntu LTS which itself is based on Debian. It’s a release-based disto. All that means extra time to wait for updated software. While it has a bit more polish, it lacks the latest features. EndeavourOS is based on Arch which is a base rolling distribution. The main and pretty much the only thing that differentiates it from Arch is the graphical installer that makes setting it up an absolute joy. It’s much more light weight than Ubuntu or it’s Derivatives and, being a rolling distribution has the absolute latest releases of software. I’d suggest going with KDE plasma for a DE. While I don’t have an Nvidia graphics, I do know that Arch and, by inheritance, EndeavourOS fully support it.

peterg75,

You’re must be joking! Look around, if you look past the bitten apple, there are plenty of perfectly capable devices out there for under $300. In fact, I see plenty of people who are on the street corners panhandling AND using a smartphone.

peterg75,

Of course you can get a used of refurbished ones for less even Apple. I was referring to new devices. As an example, I use a Motorola Edge plus that I bought new for $400. It does everything my wife’s iPhone 15 Pro. The camera quality is slightly lower, but perfectly adequate.

peterg75,

Crate an account on a different instance? And oh yeah, stop being a dink?

peterg75,

No other way, if you’re banned.

peterg75,

From what I see Hexbear is pretty toxic and gets regularly defederated anyway.

peterg75,

I got an off-lease dell latitude 7400. Tbh, got it for free, but you can snag one on eBay for under $400. i5, 16 Gb ram, got a 1TB drive for $50 on Amazon. Runs Linux very well! I’d go with a light weight is like EndeavourOS or Arch.

peterg75,

Do a search in All for the keywords for the community name. Chances are you are either not going to find some of them or find multiple ones on several Lemmy instances. If you find several, subscribe to all and see which one is the most active, if you find none, consider starting one yourself.

peterg75,

EndeavourOS for the win! The speed of Arch Linux without the installation pain! Especially for older hardware?

Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?

Well, my friend, he’s kinda poor he can’t afford some books and some streaming services, so he pirates. He pirate books, audiobook and videos and other stuff. Sometimes he buys books he likes a lot out of loyalty to the author (yeah, I don’t understand it either), he likes to read physical books, but yeah, if he hates the...

peterg75,

My rule of thumb is this: if I perceive that the IP I want, was created by an individual who must have spent their blood sweat and tears creating it, I’ll pay for it to encourage that work. If, on the other hand I’m being made to pay extra for something just because there’s a queue of corporations that just want to profit for providing something made by others, I pirate it as a form of protest. As an example, I’ll gladly pay for an ebook being distributed through an author’s website even if I’m not sure I’m going to like it. But I will not pay for a cable subscription just to be able to watch sports programs. Another example: I’ve paid money for mobile games when I see a lot of effort being spent in making the gameplay engaging, but I will delete or try to cheat or pirate games that I perceive as pay-to-win.

While I agree that getting bullied in the news cycle is not healthy, I feel like getting the information about what’s going on around you from memes is also not good. It lacks context and details to enable the user from processing the news with critical thinking. I don’t know what the answer is, but for people who exercise their power of a vote, I feel like they need to be as knowledgeable about the issues as possible.

peterg75,

I dropped and deleted the account. Only time I go to Reddit now is if I am searching for something and a Reddit link is part of the search and happen to have the answer I need.

peterg75,

A fair point. I deleted my account to reduce the statistics of active users of Reddit. On the one hand, I agree that the information that exists there is still relevant and can be helpful for some people, on the other, I don’t want my account to count for some stat that Spez will use to report to investors on the continued viability of Reddit.

peterg75,

Gimp, OpenOffice.org, VLC, Slackware, and on and on after that. Every flavor of Linux: RedHat, SuSe, Ubuntu, now on Manjaro and Endeavour.

peterg75,

Gnome online accounts are also in Cinnamon if you like a more traditional desktop paradigm. Using it now on Manjaro. Works well.

peterg75,

I don’t know if there’s any gasoline car vs electric studies, but there’s been some research into, for example, carbon footprint of oil drilling vs lithium mining. Here’s one of the articles that has a bunch of sources sited:

8billiontrees.com/…/carbon-footprint-of-lithium-i….
