I was thinking about shopping for a nice watch and remembered I had my grandfather's old Seiko automatic sitting in a drawer. Pulled it out and it was in really bad shape. Cracked crystal, very grimy, and although it did run, there was not much of a reserve. It's not a valuable watch at all, but it does have a lot of sentimental value for me.

Well, I sent it in for a complete overhaul, and couldn't be happier with the result.

The same watch after repair and cleaning. Beautiful, and working perfectly.

@Erich my parents gave me a nice seiko watch like this in the 70s, back when it was believed that I could be trusted with objects of value. I sure did like it, but not for long

I finally removed it from the App Store, RIP. Would probably feel worse if I didn't consider the service dead too.

Who else learned how to drive like this? Just reacting to a projector playing a video of someone else driving. I believe it was generously called a "simulator"

@peterhoneyman@a2mi.social avatar

@dan @ricci @kstatz12 @cross i was one! but Lynn didn’t see the value in it, so that was that. (Same with my awesome collection of boxes that Apple products came in — I had so many, I was able to build a little fort out of them! they had to go, too )

I’m thinking about the Roman Empire again

peterhoneyman,
@peterhoneyman@a2mi.social avatar

Oops, this one is the mosaic depicting wild boar hunting in Mauritania, the outer reaches of the Roman Empire, in the fourth century A.D.

It’s Italy’s National Day of Liberation so government offices, including schools, are closed and there’s a bunch of wild children here.

driving in this part of sicily is harrowing, in part because the routes all look like this

there was an enormous analemma laid out in marble at the duomo di san giorgio in modica alta

We ended up in a comfy pensione in Valguarnera Caropepe, where we’re spending a couple nights

peterhoneyman,
@peterhoneyman@a2mi.social avatar

After spending the morning checking out mosaics at the Villa Romana del Casale di Piazza Armerina, we drove to Enna, where we encountered the ancient Torre Ottagonale di Enna, an astronomical-geodetic-religious tower, said to date back 3,000 years

There are two tall, arched rooms like this one stacked on top of the other

peterhoneyman,
@peterhoneyman@a2mi.social avatar

the views of enna from the top of the tower were amazing

back in valguarnera caropepe after a day of maniacally stressful driving, we’re chilling and watching spaghetti westerns

Pizza last night at Repubblica 20Due in Valguarnera Caropepe was so good we inhaled nearly the whole thing before stopping to take a pic. Gran bignè farcito con crema for dessert was also amazing.

Walking home afterwards, we saw how they put out the trash at night in Valguarnera Caropepe.

This morning, we drove out of the mountains to Agrigento, on the coast. I was driving 😱 so I couldn’t focus on the sights, but they were incredible. I kept exclaiming “lookit that! lookit that!” as we careered down the broad green and brown landscape between low peaks topped with crumbling fortresses.

Once in Agrigento, we headed for the Duomo, which was of course extremely impressive.

We climbed the clock tower and saw the old works and the weights and everything and that was pretty cool.

The cathedral itself had the usual millennial history, baroque Sicilian beauty, and gory relics. Love that.

About that mummified corpse …

“In the glass coffin there is an embalmed body, officially identified as St. Felice Martire, but there are 15 martyrs with this name and it is not known which he is.”

lololol

peterhoneyman,

we checked into a pensione on the outskirts of agrigento, near the valley of the temples, and had an american dinner

we got an early start to avoid the crush of tourists, i.e., people like us

eventually they arrived and we made a hasty exit
