Threads Will Break Kbin And Lemmy: interoperability isn't just about the protocol (x-post from kbin.social/m/FediPact) (fedia.io)

With the launch of Threads, there's been a lot of interesting talk about the safety and privacy risks it poses to people on the fediverse, if and when Meta begins federating. But it's also worth examining the risks to the social systems....

smallpatatas,

Yes, however I'm talking about a post that originates on Kbin being boosted on Threads. A big account can put a post in front of millions of people that can re-boost it and drive it up the charts. You're right though: the solution is to block that instance :)

smallpatatas,

Sorting by new is similar to reading the federated feed in Mastodon. You can do that if you like, but you're removing all collective and social control over what you see. To me, that's a huge tradeoff.

smallpatatas,

This is a good question. I did see someone over on Mastodon wondering about blocking IP ranges, but the consensus seemed to be that whack-a-mole security puts a high burden on admins.

Unfortunately I'm not technical enough to speak to anything specific to kbin

smallpatatas,

Alright - in discussions with some folks prior to this kbin magazine we've had suggestions for using the hashtag

At present the thinking is to start putting some pressure on instance admins to weigh in on whether or not they are going to allow federation w/ the 'P92' platform. This way we get a discussion going, and users can begin voting with their feet if necessary.

If you have links to articles about the many horrible actions of Meta, please post them!

If you have opinions on why Meta should be blocked, let's hear them!

If you have thoughts on how to convince folks that we're much better off without Meta, please share!

Let's get this rolling <3

smallpatatas,

And I think it only works properly if it's collective. This isn't just about how we use functions of a protocol, it's about what kind of community we want to be.
