For someone who works hard to avoid processed or junk food, I’m awfully fond of Vegemite.

stojg,

@billbennett Vegemite isn’t junk or processed, it’s … grown?

this will rub some people, in some way.

i have to confess that when i was a young lad, i saw a website talking about how much nicer looking and easier it is to read text in only lowercase, and i still think about it.

i can see the point of helping to separate sentences when paper is expensive, but digitally, a space is cheap.

so this is my occasional rebellion against the non-tyranny of writing rules. :P

This is not a software glitch, it's the Y1C problem: old mainframes were so storage-constrained that they only allocated two decimal digits for passenger age, and adding another digit would mean rewriting software that in some cases has been in use and constantly patched since the late 1950s.

Okay people hit me with your alternatives to New Relic as a open telemetry sink / end point / place to see what is going on.

Preferably self hosted and free.

Yes, I have considered /dev/null but some people are the company will know what that actually means.

@jonoabroad prometheus and grafana is a popular combination. However it has a pull architecture that doesn’t fit for everyone

Calcifer the Beagle is leaving home, his bag is all packed. (We freed him eventually, I promise.)

@thomasbeagle wait, is Calcifer a pun on the way that beagles like to howl? Like in Howls Moving Castle? In that case, well played.

I just learned the term"cassette futurism", like how sci-fi used to look when it was filmed in the 70-80s. Like Alien. I didn't know it had a name, but I might be a fan of that aesthetic.

Decided to delay my exercise so I could get a nice picture of the sun setting over the plain on this glorious day. The weather later in the day: (still was a nice)

First world problems. What’s with the beetroot shortage? Every Subway in Dunedin doesn’t have any beetroot. TBH the only reason I go into subway is to have a mostly beetroot wrap.

stojg,
@stojg@mastodon.nz avatar

@iangriffin I have a friend in Wellington that reported his local subway had a “salt & pepper” shortage for weeks.

My after action report from Xmas dinner was that the “French” potatoe salad and tabbouleh bulgur came out great. The green salad was a bit meh (it’s a green salad after all) and the I chickened out on making the coleslaw exciting. Someone made a baked potato gratin with three types of cheese and while very heavy for a hot day, I loved it so much. I might have had a tiny slice of meat just to be courteous 😅

Is it me being fussy or do other people think that news media, including specialist tech news media, doesn’t do a great job reporting AI? Specifically, there’s often not enough explaining and background information for someone coming new to a story to get a handle on it.

stojg,
@stojg@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett it’s a shame that a lot of current “reporting” is taking what someone says, ignoring to cross check with another or two experts, and the write a link baiting headline and catchy lede. Maybe I’m just old and bitter, but yes, I find that a lot of unverified claims are being parroted at the moment.

stojg,

@billbennett I’m a Swede and got a massive amount of jargon from US in the topics I was interested in at the time. Around 00 -10s.

Ah my router is doing the thing again where it happily sends through all mastodon.nz traffic but I can't reach any other websites.

<poke> Ah, actually it's allowing traffic to any website where I've got a window open with a real-time connection: Protonmail and Youtube also work.

But non-live websites don't work eg I have a Spinoff article open but I can't load any other Spinoff page.

This is clearly a Clue. But I still don't know what to do with it other than turn my router off and on again.

stojg,

@idanoo @zeborah it’s dns. You can temporary change your DNS provider from your provider to something else https://www.tomsguide.com/us/cloudflare-dns-1.1.1.1-set-up,news-26964.html
