I'm a big fan of James Hoffmann for all things coffee. He just made a video about "What Great Coffee tastes like" and it's a real delight. May I commend this as a lovely way to wrap up your week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkssYHTSpH4

Happy Friday!

@_Davidsmith what a freaking masterpiece! Even trumps the Makita coffee maker review.

@siracusa What are your thoughts on the upcoming VW ID7?

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa Watching Volkswagen figure out the interior for their ID cars has been painful. It’s like they are learning how to make good interiors all over again. Are there concrete prices for the ID7 in the US yet? The German prices are not great especially because they are pitching it as a Passat replacement. It starts at 54000€.

Got my new grinder and espresso machine a couple of hours ago 😀

technocidal,

@simonbs And I recommended a sub 200€ replacement at the start of this journey…good ol days 😆

This looks really good! Really clean. The wood accents look so nice! Congratulations

WTAF has happened to iPad Pro pricing since I got my 2018 model? JFC

…and we're expecting a further price hike in the upcoming revision? 😵‍💫

I may never get another iPad at this rate. That's twice the price of my Mac mini already, but a tiny fraction of the actual value

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith it’s bananas! When my wife needed an iPad we looked at used ones and got a really good deal. We paid 1000€ for a 5th Gen 1TB with LTE. We never even considered buying a new one, because it would have been twice as much.

Been researching espresso machines for days and my conclusion is that I want Apple to do an espresso machine. All machines on the market have horrible UI/UX and bad aesthetics.

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs Or are just so ridiculously expensive.
I’ve the Rancilio Silva V6 E but if money was no object I’d like to have the La Marzocco Nordic Linea Mini.

https://lamarzocco.com/es/es/product/nordic-linea-mini/?cmdf=la+marzocco+linea+mini+nordic

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I don’t know if you looked at them already, but Nuova Simonelli machines are one of only a few home espresso machines that allow you to program a button so that you don’t have to get out the scale every single morning without being crazy expensive.

https://nuovasimonelli.it/en/our-products/home/

IMO they look decent albeit a little bit “fake-modern/sci-fi” if that makes sense 😀

They aren’t cheap by any stretch, but it seems you’ve fallen down a pretty deep rabbit hole already, so…

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs Yeah. I forgot to factor in the grinding. That feature is only helpful to automate the actual pulling of the shot but grinding is still a separate step.

I didn’t think it could get worse than the EU mandated cookie warnings, but this really is awful.

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@sdw especially because the UI just freezes when you select any of the options while trying to open the App Store Page in a sheet. Even for Safari…

Any recommendations for good coffee machines with a built-in grinder? ☕ 😋

My old and beloved Philips HD7765 is beginning to produce irregular results. I'm eyeing the newer model generation, Philips HD7888, but are there other brands and models I should consider?

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs While I think about an actual recommendation I can tell you that according to James Hoffmann you shouldn’t buy this one:

https://youtu.be/aIY-qWO3q9Q?si=ZYq6wAiDtpPjGOB7

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I mean the Philipps machines are pretty hard to beat on price. Lidl in Germany has the 7888 for 149€ currently.

The Sage/Breville machines that were mentioned are a safe bet although quite a bit more expensive.

https://www.breville.com/us/en/products/coffee/bdc650.html?sku=BDC650BSSUSC

I thought about just recommending a grinder, but that renders the auto-brew function of these machines useless.

technocidal, (edited )
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs The burrs do look different to the ones found in their dedicated grinders so comparing reviews sadly doesn’t work, but they generally do a pretty good job with their grinders – the Smart Grinder Pro is considered a good choice for people getting into coffee - so I imagine the one in this machine is very capable grinding for drip coffee.

technocidal, (edited )
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I looked into it and it seems at one point it was available through their German subsidiary Gastroback as the Gastroback 42720, but it’s also out of stock everywhere.

That sucks

@christianselig Who needs iA Writer when you’ve got Xcode Previews.

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig the true reason why I build this is way more boring: Our marketing team at work wants to format upsell content using Markdown and they want to show lists which means the native SwiftUI Markdown support is not suitable.

Is there a way for a Swift Package plugin to call a third-party command-line tool? Specifically, I'd like to call the 1Password command-line tool.

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs There is ShellOut by John Sundell. This should work for running it via the command line. I’m unsure whether this would also work inside a Xcode Build or Command Plugin due to their sandboxed nature.

I can't seem to find anything about the Ai Pin as a development platform. Is it not open to third-party developers?

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@nicolasf @simonbs They basically said that at least for they will just try to let the AI figure stuff out on its own. It’s in the 10 minute announcement video.

technocidal, (edited )
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs @nicolasf No worries. Here is the clip from a re-upload on YouTube.

They do talk about services that will “come online” later just before this clip but do not mention if those will be third-party.

I gotta be honest, I've reached the point where the Shortcuts app is so broken in so many different ways, it's kinda charming now.

Now, it decided it just randomly hides every UI element. It does this every few minutes, because why not? It's buggy with an attitude.

technocidal,
@technocidal@mastodon.social avatar

@viticci I can no longer enter text when running a Shortcut. It just passes all keypresses to the currently active app behind the running shortcut. I’ve this neat App Icon Downloader shortcut that I now have to run inside Shortcuts.app by changing the default value of the text entry thingy. Confusingly the same menu handles button clicks just fine. Just the text field is broken.
