Civil liberties, geekery, politics, YA/SF books, tasty vegan food, family life, #NerdCryptic. Yes I do have a beagle, his name's Calcifer, and he'd really like to sniff you while you pat him. #nztwits

After careful consideration of the vast range of food available from across the world, I have determined that my very favourite food is: hot chips.

What's yours?

Today I was reflecting on the death of the micro-computer. It was a vision of a small personal computer that you owned and controlled, that did everything that you needed (or at least what was possible at the time). Even when they connected to other systems they tended to bring data back to work on locally.

Now we have the network computer, where the boundaries between here and there are hard to define, a smart internet terminal where both ends can update at any time without us even knowing.

The proposed new changes to the Firearms Protections Orders seem pretty extreme:

"The new search power allows the Police to search the person, any thing in the person’s possession or control, any premises in which the person is present or that the person owns, occupies, or controls, and any vehicle in which the person is present and any other persons present in the vehicle believed to be in possession of arms, and to seize and detain any arms found."

It's 10:20am and there's still no message from the school telling me to pick up the dog from School Pet Day. Mustn't be going too badly.

Feel vaguely sad I find it necessary to spend $80 on a chain and padlock to secure the $160 park bench I just put at the front of the house.

Now looking up tracking collars for dogs after the beagle escaped for about the third time in three months (combined efforts of 12yo and builders.) Really didn't need a dog search with all three of us being sick at the moment!

He is now back in custody.

I'm old enough to remember when the software on a computer never changed unless you changed it.

Relying on a single cloud service to store your data is the new "I just never got round to taking a backup!" but instead of a failing hard drive they've just deleted your account.

And in yet another example of wilfully denying the reality of history - I don't see why those pimples have to appear in the annual family photo book.

Sad phone is sad.

This is where we find out how hard it is to get a slightly uncommon phone fixed. (Motorola Edge 30 Neo.)

Sweet fruity toast toppings - it's time for a poll!

After extensive browsing of online supermarkets, I have selected 15 jams and marmalades, then added lemon curd to make up the numbers.

With a bit of luck there will be four polls of four items each. You vote, I collate and then we do it all again until there's one winner.

With nzserver.co closing, does anyone have a suggestion for a good instance to host the NZ Council for Civil Liberties account?

Mighty Ape used to be so good, this sort of thing is just embarrassing "Unfortunately we have been inundated with messages and this has affected our customer service response times."

You can tell they just don't care when that's in their standard email auto-response.

In the old days I'd assume it was a technical problem causing Reddit in the browser to get unreliable and slow, but these days I assume they're deliberately fucking it up to force people to use their app.

Complaining to Davis Trading in Petone that they keep selling me rice pre-infested with rice weevils. It'll be interesting to see what they have to say.

MIcrosoft Word has supported styles for over 30 years, do you think you could finally learn to use them? Please? What if I begged?

Storm hitting Carterton now and wow it really is rather impressive.

And yes, I am counting the seconds between seeing the lightning flash and hearing the thunder. 3 seconds per km is really easy to remember.

Would buying an EV make sense? I did some numbers.

We've just completed 75000km in our 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander at 7.5l/100km costing $2.75/litre for a total energy cost of $15,500 or just over $3.1k per year.

An MG4 doing the same distance at 16kWh per 100km and 0.30kWh (home charging) would have an energy cost of $3600, plus an additional $5700 for RUCs at $76/1000km. Total cost of $9300 or $1900 per year.

What a beautiful day! I have naturally spent it on plumbing our rain water tanks (finally complete!) and mowing the lawns. Next: putting up the pool.

I feel much better about spending time on house and garden maintenance now I've stopped thinking of it as a chore and more as a combination hobby/exercise.
