Every once in a while my kids pull my long-dead Motorola Droid X out of their toy chest and I laugh about how at the time I bought the phone it was considered just an absurdly large device.

The Droid X looking positively puny next to a Pixel 4 XL

I apologize in advance, but I had to get this dumb thing out of my head:

A quick PSA: the async method adapter.requestAdapterInfo() is being replaced with the attribute adapter.info. You can try it now in Chrome Canary!

https://chromiumdash.appspot.com/commit/9e908a7dca56215132ec7afc8962b18f993bbd2d

requestAdapterInfo will stick around in Chrome for a little bit while we monitor usage, but we plan to eventually remove it and leave just adapter.info. From what I hear Firefox and Safari are considering only shipping the adapter.info variant.

Read on for a thread about why!

@BenHouston3D Incoming WebGPU change you'll want to be aware of for web3dsurvey.com! We're replacing adapter.requestAdapterInfo() with adapter.info. https://chromiumdash.appspot.com/commit/9e908a7dca56215132ec7afc8962b18f993bbd2d

Guilty on all counts. It'll be fascinating to see what effect that has on the election.

VSCode: "You're moving some TypeScript files! Would you the import paths updated to match?"

Sure. Take a crack at it.

VSCode: "Great! I replaced all the absolute paths that point at your 'node_modules' folder with just the package name!"

That breaks everything! Why would you do that?

VSCode: "That's how Node module resolution works!"

THIS ISN'T A NODE PROJECT! IT RUNS IN THE BROWSER!

VSCode: "Ooh. Then why did you remove all the folder names and extensions?"

It bothers me far more than it should that sharps and flats are stateful in musical notation.

The online scheduler for service on my wife's car has a big list of services you can select like "Replace Torque Converter" and "Engine Control Module Reset" but conspicuously does NOT have an option for "I don't know, it's doing a weird thing. I am not a car guy, that is why I am bringing it to you!"

There's a song in Hades II that the main character jokes about being annoyed that it's stuck in her head, which I laughed about.

Just now I realized that I've been humming it all morning. 'mGoingDown

Hi-Fi Rush was a fun, imaginative, unique game that was critically acclaimed. So of course Microsoft is rewarding the studio behind it by laying them all off. They're apparently not even folding the team into other projects, just letting them all go. 🤬🤬🤬

Me: "Hades II looks great, and the first one was one of my favorite games of all time. But I'm going to resist the urge to buy it during the early access period because I want to experience the full-"

Supergiant: "Here's a pretty trailer"

Me: "Aaaannnddd now it's installed it on my Steamdeck."

Good job with that self control, me. 😅

Went to Best Buy with my wife to get her a Chromebook to replace her (very) old laptop, where we met Sales Guy who:

  • Stuck around giving "advice" after we said we were fine, thanks. 🙄
  • Continued to explain Chromebooks to us after I pointed out that I work on the Chrome team. 😠
  • Pointed to my wife and asked "Does your mom want this on her account?" 🤬

Published a new glMatrix v4 beta! (Only three days short of a year after the first beta...😩)

Gonna try to pick up the pace of addressing feedback and getting it released. I've been using this branch in my personal code for the last year and it's quite a bit nicer to use IMO. Hope that you all feel the same!

I picked up a 3D printer because my kids had shown a lot of interest in one and I had some ideas for projects I wanted to use one for.

Was nervous about how fiddly everyone made it sound, so I was pleasantly surprised when the first print went perfectly! Second one too. Third had a very minor adhesion problem, but didn't ruin the print...

I've now tried to print a fourth object 6 times and have yet to make it past the second layer successfully. 😭

It turns out the last uncleared level ("Trimming the Herbs") in Super Mario Maker was only uploaded with the help of a TAS, so now the game is considered "beaten!"

The last level to be cleared was, fittingly, "The Last Dance".

Re LRT: @ada has been working hard to figure out how to use the Vision Pro's unique input style with WebXR, and I think the solution that she's worked out with the rest of the Immersive Web group is pretty elegant. The only downside is that if a WebXR app has been hard coded to assume that you'll only ever have input in the form of two controllers then they'll fail to recognize these transient inputs.

Well that was exciting. Had the wheel of my kid's bike tear itself apart while inflating the tire today, shortly after which the tube exploded. Wasn't even up to the recommended PSI yet. 😵

And now I find that most of the places you can buy a wheel from will charge me more for it than I think the whole bike cost originally. Joy.

Thought I was sick with COVID for the last week (feeling better now). But I just got a PCR test result back that said no? Yay, I guess? But now I really want to know what DID take me down. :(

One of the hazards of trying out older games is that if you get hooked on one you've missed out on all the online discussion around it.

I've been enjoying Slay the Spire while recovering from maybe-COVID, but I don't have anyone to tell about the fun "Oops! All Shivs!" build I stumbled into. 🥺
