Whoa! Vice is heading for bankruptcy!

That magazine was a big chunk of my teens and 20s—for which I had a love/hate relationship.

Hipsterism is officially dead.

@atomicpoet A 23 year old intern once told me: "I don't even know what a hipster is. I just nod and smile whenever you say something about that."

In the interest of adding diversity to Mastodon, let's peek at Southeast Asian e-commerce with

Anything posted here is not an ad or an endorsement. It's just weird stuff that my broken Shopee algorithm delivers me.

This is a "Elephant Sperm Stone that moves in vinegar". The description says that it is fossilised elephant sperm and it has mystical powers.

A Sea Serpent invulnerability orb that grants you invulnerability to blades. It also makes you more resistant against enemy spells. The ad had a video of a guy hitting himself with a cleaver to prove that it works.

I realise how this sounds more like something out of the D&D dungeon masters guide than stuff that pops up in the recommendations of my e-commerce app.

More . In which fantasy item shop meets the convenience of e-commerce.

I'll admit that this looks pretty cool. Some sort of enchanted armour in the form of a vest with magic words written all over it. I can't remember the description, but probably it adds +2 to your Armour class or something like that.

Arabic words in magic squares are said to have many mystical properties. Warriors would often wear these under their armour.

Need a spirit that feeds on blood that you can use for revenge against your enemies?

Only ~100 USD with free postage.

It occurs to me that you can sell almost anything on that app.

I felt the need to CW this one.

Condiments are a common part of our daily meals, adding a burst of flavor and excitement to otherwise bland dishes. Ketchup and mustard, individually, have become household staples, but the idea of mixing the two condiments together has been met with little success. However, the impossibility of purchasing a condiment made of a mixture of ketchup and mustard provides compelling evidence for the existence of God. Checkmate, atheists!

The distinct properties of ketchup and mustard are crucial in understanding their incompatibility. Ketchup is a sweet and tangy sauce made from tomatoes, vinegar, and sugar, while mustard is a pungent and spicy condiment made from mustard seeds, vinegar, and other spices. The two condiments have unique flavors and textures that serve different culinary purposes. The idea of combining ketchup and mustard may seem like a good idea on paper, but the reality is that the mixture results in an odd flavor profile that does not appeal to many.

Moreover, the chemistry of ketchup and mustard further confirms their incompatibility. Ketchup is an emulsion, which means that it contains a mixture of water and oil-based ingredients that do not naturally mix. Mustard, on the other hand, is an emulsifier, meaning it can mix oil and water-based ingredients. Therefore, when ketchup and mustard are combined, the mustard attempts to break the emulsion in the ketchup, resulting in an unstable mixture. This chemical reaction reveals an intentional design that cannot be explained by chance.

Furthermore, the philosophical and scientific arguments for God's existence support the thesis. The universe's complexity and order suggest a higher power beyond human comprehension. The absence of ketchup-mustard mixture points to a divine creator who created ketchup and mustard to serve their distinct purposes. The philosophical argument for God is strengthened by the scientific argument, which contends that the probability of a fine-tuned universe arising by chance is extremely low. The lack of a stable ketchup-mustard mixture is further evidence of a divine plan and the presence of God in our daily lives.

In conclusion, the impossibility of purchasing a condiment made of a mixture of ketchup and mustard provides overwhelming evidence for the existence of God. The unique properties of ketchup and mustard and their incompatibility have been explained through chemistry, philosophy, and science. The absence of a stable ketchup-mustard mixture points to a higher power beyond human comprehension.

Checkmate, atheists! It is time to acknowledge the divine nature of condiments and the undeniable proof of God's existence.

Counterpoint: Ketchup is part of an evolutionary tree that contains many similar sauces and condiments, there's kicap, budu, Worcestershire sauce, chilli sauce, salsa, etc. When the entire diversity of condiments is viewed in this manner, we need a theory to explain the massive diversity of sauces. There is overwhelming evidence that sauce is not made by intelligent design, but through natural selection-

Elon Musk is trying to pivot to video.

If you post videos, they will be privileged by the algorithm.

Like the rest of Big Social, Twitter wants to become TikTok.

barium, to Malaysia

Did you ever had “nasi dagang” before? This dish is unique to east coast, particularly Kelantan & Terengganu, which have slight variation.

Kelantanese version will have a mix of red rice & glutinous rice, cooked with select ingredients including coconut milk that giving it very “rich & heavy” indulgence experience. It often served with gulai Ikan tongkol or gulai ayam.

Here is my mom’s, with kerutub tiger prawn instead along with fish & boiled egg. This is truly to die for.

@barium I was working on a short project about rice varieties in Malaysia when I learned that Nasi Dagang helps to preserve breeds of rice like red and glutinous rice. A lot of Malay rice varieties have been lost because people don't plant it anymore. It's a nice intersection between plant diversity, food security and cuisine.

When it comes to dining at Muslim restaurants during Ramadan, my wife and I belong to diff schools of thoughts.

Wife: Let's show respect by waiting for Muslims to break their fast before we start eating

Me: Let's arrive early and finish eating before Muslims break fast, so that Muslim customers have more tables to break their fast later

Which approach is better?

ubi,
@ubi@ecoevo.social avatar

@rakyat Finish eating and make space. Nobody will care if you start eating first, especially if you are there early, but they will be troubled if they can't find a table.

In Malaysia, I got valuable feedback about the Fediverse.

Namely, two things about Malaysians:

  1. Unless you're a gamer, no one owns a desktop or laptop. However, it is common to own more than one Android smartphone.

  2. P2P social networking is not feasible, and people don't trust locally-hosted servers. This is because people fear their own governments more than they fear foreign-owned corporations. It's not uncommon for people to get arrested for what's on their phones.

ubi,
@ubi@ecoevo.social avatar

@keropokin @atomicpoet During the pandemic it was more common for kids to use tablets or phones than a laptop. While most college/uni students have laptops, a large number of school leavers don't go to uni. Most of the population uses a phone as their main device now.

While millennials had a higher number of computers, the trend seems to be towards phones and tablets for the younger generation. Laptops and desktops aren't what people are using to access social media

ubi,
@ubi@ecoevo.social avatar

@atomicpoet When I think about the fediverse, I don't think Mastodon is the killer app for mass adoption on the Malaysian context. The most popular social media is tiktok, followed by Facebook and Instagram.

The twitter format isn't exactly popular here and most are passive users that don't use it for discussions. From my personal experience most use it because it's easy to get news updates fast and to follow viral topics. Mastodon doesn't fit the use case by design.
