TIL from Rashad Becker that on vinyl, high-end frequencies are better reproduced at the beginning of the record (outer rim) than they are at the end of the record (inner rim). So, basically, the music gets more dull over time. https://youtu.be/K6UBJniOynM?t=1901

I love this distinction between songs and grooves from Ethan Hein. (He adds linear "pieces" to the taxonomy in a more recent blog post.)

This is something I've struggled with in my music, but I didn't really have the vocabulary to understand it.

williamfields,

“The idea that grooves are less 'intellectual' or substantive than songs has a long and racist history, and it’s an idea that persists right on up through to the present.” —Ethan Hein

Predicting a major cultural backlash against anything that even remotely smells AI generated. It will be looked down upon as cheap and tacky.

Perhaps I am stating the obvious. I suppose this is already happening.

Synthesized Oberheim DMX Snare - Apparently my new hobby is recreating drum sounds with a subtractive synthesizer. Every other hit is synthesized. This is as close as I could get without driving myself insane.

I've run out of podcasts to listen to again. Any recommendations? I like

  • Off Menu
  • St Elwick's Neighbourhood Association Newsletter Podcast
  • Novara FM
  • Wheel of misfortune (the Alison and Fern ones)
  • Blindboy podcast
  • News agents
  • Love is the message
williamfields,

@yaxu I'm eternally grateful for your recommendation of the Blindboy Podcast. I'm a big fan now. His recent series on Mythology and Simulation Theory has been great craic. ;)

The duration trick from @ho: 'Every “note on” message is accompanied with an anticipated duration.'

williamfields,

@miunau @sean_ae @ho For me, it was because note-offs are a pain in the ass to deal with. (Stuck notes, etc) I'd rather postpone that to the very end of the chain.

Mastering engineers should offer a (less expensive) service where they listen to your track and just describe in words what they would do if they were mastering it. Basically ears for hire.

Does anyone do this?

One thing I learned from this latest release is that @Bandcamp handles free downloads badly. It doesn't show up in the feed, it doesn't show up in your collection, and there's no way to see how many people downloaded (as far as I know). Lame.

williamfields,

I changed Antero to "name your price", so that you have the option to add it your Bandcamp collection and do mobile streaming, etc.

williamfields,

Oh, and here are some codes:

I'm trying to make a synthesized recreation of a 909 ride cymbal for "fun".

It's really challenging. There's something special going on with the relationship between the partials. They're not harmonic, but they're not random either.

williamfields,
