@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network

Guy who bakes, snarks, writes, and codes.

Currently at Google (my second search engine employer!), previously at Bloomberg.

One time Perl 6 pumpking, lo these many years ago, as well as core perl contributor and part-time VMS perl port maintainer. I have written the occasional article, mostly on perl. (but once upon a time long ago on the Amiga. Those were the days...)

Currently not in France. Dammit.

I am currently in the odd position of trying to decide if the utility of yet another French grammar book is worth the extra weight in my luggage for the flight home.

And yes, you can assume I have bought enough physical books that the question's not a silly one. :)

@rgs Mais la femme à la librarie va penser que je prend la bac!

Or something like that, except actually grammatically correct

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@rgs Well, not with my grammar skills, that's for sure.

Listening to the last gasps of some prog rock this afternoon and heard this:

"In recent times, there is no one at all who can approach Antonio Gaudi. He started a new cathedral, in Barcelona It is called La Sagrada Familia or the Holy Family... The sad thing is they could try to finish it, but I don't think they will do it"

And it's just kinda neat that turned out not to be the case.

Dammit, I'm apparently missing all the good Storrowings.

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@corgidad Beers? I could argue there are no good storrowings in that context, given that "good beer" is an oxymoron. (Don't @ me, beer is gross, though it does make for nice breading. And pastry cream)

I was more thinking of the "ramming your truck into a bridge" kind, since there was another one of those yesterday.

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@corgidad Double-storrowed! If they were actually carrying Storrowed beer on the truck then honestly they should mark up the price and call it a special batch.

I am amused that whenever I stop by the little Vietnamese place by the apartment for takeout they always give me a set of wooden cutlery but when my husband (who's Chinese) stops by he gets chopsticks.

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@ColesStreetPothole It is! But amusing, though honestly I'd prefer to get chopsticks, they're easier to use.

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@ColesStreetPothole If I would have to guess, I'd put most white french people in the "don't know how to use chopsticks" camp. (the vietnamese place near my house, back in the states... doesn't give me any utensils because they know we've already got plenty :)

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@ColesStreetPothole What? Someone in New Jersey a buffoon? No, say it isn't so! :)

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@ColesStreetPothole I'd say the big downside to a very strict open records law is the potential for "New Jersey Man" to join "Florida Man" in the pantheon of "what the actual fuck, seriously?" except NJ's aready got that (in fairness, somewhat undeserved) rep so it probably won't make things worse. (It's a little amusing that "Florida Man", as a concept, is a direct result of their very strong open public records laws)

This is neat but I'm not 100% convinced that breeding bacteria that can withstand normal sterilization temperatures and embedding said bacteria into plastic to degrade it is a great idea. (What happens with long storage? And does it make it food-unsafe?) Though breeding bacteria that can in general eat one of the common types of plastic is probably a good idea.

One of the trucks was from a local brewery with a beer they call "Storrowing". Irony apparently tastes of hops.

Whenever I see someone has been censured for “their beliefs” without the specific beliefs being listed I always assume racism, sexism, fascism, homophobia, or transphobia. So far I have very rarely been wrong. Unfortunately. https://zirk.us/@nickbwalking/112432932655011050

@DerGiga Oh, absolutely. Occasionally it's just one of them (or one of them is so prominent that the rest aren't nearly as obvious) but usually these kinds of awful people are multidimensionally awful.

Has anyone put together a turnkey mastodon install/setup for orgs? I’ve been seeing “orgs should spin up their own instance!” a bunch, especially for news orgs. And while that’s theoretically true it’s only gonna be practical if that’s actually trivial to do.

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@abnv not bad as a start, though I suspect a not-tenchical-focused org might still have some issues. (Though I can see many of those being in the realm of management rather than setup, which is its own set of problems)

If US automakers actually made small cars any time over the last, say, decade maybe they wouldn’t be quite so worried. Or, y’know, if their cars haven’t basically sucked since the 80s. https://press.coop/@seattletimes/112432292450889223

I would very frankly recommend anyone who takes a job at Google view it in an extremely mercenary way. Goods and services are being exchanged for money and that’s all that should be exchanged. They’re renting your time and expertise, not your enthusiasm, loyalty, or soul. https://flipboard.social/@TechDesk/112429837720509673

How! And also the post mortem for this is probably amazing. I’m not gonna look since that’s just not appropriate but I look forward to many years of “oh, shit, you have no idea” stories told over beer. https://hachyderm.io/@bentomn/112423239188365194

I assume when Mekka hears about how awesomely innovative the US VC industry is he doesn’t actually laugh. Much. https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/112423073679596246

@rgs I remember back in the day we delivered payroll data to the banks on 9-track magtape with EBCDIC coded data in magic record format, though that got upgraded to FTPing EBCDIC coded XML files to the bank. I assume the US has upgraded to… emailing them as attachments or something.

Not that I really want VC involved in the financial industry, but these dudes suck at their jobs so hard you’d think they’d undergo gravitational collapse.

This is cool though it doesn’t include tax so it could be better. I really, really hate all these extra fees.

It’s annoying that they’re right, though—actually displaying the real total price will probably make people buy less stuff. https://press.coop/@NPR/112415981521792354
