I'm so exhausted by various self-hosted projects that say "It's easy to host on {Netlify|Vercel|CloudFlare}" with no thought about what happens when those companies no longer offer a free tier, get too expensive, or you just want to move off of them. One specific host as part of the infrastructure is a terrible idea.

Do you know what's nice and easy to install on a server and not locked to one vendor? PHP. https://rknight.me/notes/202405211209/

zmk,
@zmk@snailedit.social avatar

@robb I happily host my websites and projects on GitHub or Cloudflare Pages, helping me to avoid managing servers while also giving me free hosting. But they also use standard enough stacks that I could run on any server if needed: Jekyll, React, or just static HTML. Trying to utilize their positives without getting too locked in.

(I think I may be too reliant on some of Cloudflare's easy redirects for site migrations though... 😬)

Shoutout to Peacock for running a clean feed for ; now I dare you to do that for the Olympics opening ceremonies too!

The Apple TV app really falls down when different sources offer different quality options.

Here, Max offers a version of Stop Making Sense in HD, while Apple's store offers the newly remastered 4K HDR + Atmos version. But there's almost no indication of this on my phone or iPad (and literally no mention of HDR or Atmos)

The app on my Mac shows all that info, since it doesn't know about Max—why can't they just show that info everywhere?!

    @adam these kinds of sites usually scrape data (beyond avatar, username, and banner which are public) via some nefarious bots that end up in a bunch of servers (and are against the discord TOS). Still not good, but I anticipate the damage is smaller than they make it out to be

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @adam definitely fair

    (FWIW, I know we're pretty careful about the bots we put into servers I help moderate)

    Having to specifically ask for still water when you’re in Germany never gets old

    @nileane I've never understood fizzy water; whenever I've tried any it's always had a slight bitter taste that immediately turned me off

    @ivory I seem to be getting some app crashes when using the account switcher (either the quick or full one); latest TestFlight build on 17.4, iPhone 15 Pro.

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @ivory I, uh... can't do that because settings is also in the account switcher

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @ivory I don't think so. I may have added an avatar to one around a month ago when setting up a new account, but have certainly used the account switcher since then.

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @ivory I certainly haven't used that account much, so that's possible.

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @ivory BTW, TestFlight today is showing me the app crashed prompt properly, so I had it share a crash report with y'all. Not sure if it'll help, but hope it's one more data point you can use

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @ivory build 19208 seems to have fixed things!

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @ivory it was the same build and same crash, I think on build 19200.
    19208 seems to have resolved that crash—though now I'm seeing a different bug of blank image previews when attaching them

    I’m using tailwind for a project, very begrudgingly

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @robb I've never used Tailwind but that screenshot is so confusing to me. "Instead of using 100 class names" next to... a button with like two dozen class names supposedly showing that as an improvement??

    ⭐ Vision Accessibility on Apple Vision Pro by @zmk https://zmknox.com/2024/02/18/vision-accessibility-on-apple-vision-pro

    This is a great overview of using the Vision Pro for someone with low vision. Apple has a lot of faults but their commitment to making their products accessible should be applauded.

    @robb Thanks for sharing, Robb!

    I have low vision. I also bought Apple Vision Pro at launch.

    So I wrote about my experiences and how visionOS' extensive accessibility feature set helped to accommodate me using this new device with a vastly different form factor and input model https://zmknox.com/2024/02/18/vision-accessibility-on-apple-vision-pro

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @michaelsteeber I can't imagine how I'd even start using VoiceOver for visionOS in the simulator. So many different inputs to consider with the different fingers. Thanks for your kind words!

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @michaelsteeber it's certainly possible. Though I suspect that at least some things will be better simply because it's newer and has less baggage. For example: It's way easier to build an app to look good with dynamic text sizes with SwiftUi than older frameworks—and I haven't seen many examples of truly poor support there on visionOS thus far.

    @ivory in the latest beta y'all changed the way usernames display to be under the display name. While I get that it makes it more feasible to read the whole username, it felt very jarring to me to suddenly have every post be an extra line tall (which is especially notably when using a larger font size where screen space can be at a premium)
    I wish there was an option somewhere to choose whether to truncate on one line or bump to a second line

    zmk,
    @zmk@snailedit.social avatar

    @ivory I still, ideally, want to see both though (or at least, the beginning or username if it truncates), just on one line. I could maybe switch to display name only, but that gets messy when folks go changing their display names and making me confused (like when trends go around like the SpOOkY names in October).
    The two line thing makes me think that someone is starting their post with an @ mention (I'm colorblind so color isn't a great distinction on that for me)

    @simonbs small report/request: the bottom right HUD on this Runestone window is tiny, and I wish I could make it bigger. It doesn't seem to have scaled with my text size options either in app or in the system. (I have low vision, so generally make things fairly big, which has worked out well for the actual editor view.)

    I think it's very silly that we call the dial on AirPods Max and Apple Vision Pro a "Digital Crown"; it makes sense on Apple Watch, as it's a digital version of a "crown" that you'd find on a watch, but it makes much less sense to call it that in context of a thing on your head or face.
