According to the write up it sounds like the masters were color altered to adjust for xenon bulbs used in projectors (warmer, slightly more saturated tones to offset the bright, cooling effect of a xenon) and all subsequent DVD releases didn't bother to adjust it back. So, theoretically, DVD releases and subsequent upscales look slightly different than it would have appeared in theaters.
Personally I like the kind of "film noir" look this mildly toned down version brings to the movie especially with the dust and scratches from the print but I genuinely don't remember if this is accurate to the theater experience or not :\ i certainly never noticed a difference on my countless rewatches
