I kinda think you are right but I also kinda think it´s a good thing nonetheless.
This situation brings tons of people to the site in search for a reddit alternative. The closer any individual site is to reddit, the more likely it is for some or many of them to actually subscribe and be active. And one of the biggest aspects of reddit is that it has a sub for almost every topic you can think of. So now, if someone comes to kbin for example, they recognize that magazines have a similar role to subreddits and naturally they check out what magazines there are. And I believe, if some or even most of the subreddits they frequented already exist as a magazine, that might be a signal to them that this may be indeed a viable reddit alternative.
