MicrobeRust,

I've often wondered about this bit of history/folklore I found while walking along Hadrian's Wall, on the outskirts of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. It features the following description, but I've never managed to find any other further details. "Did You Know? An altar found in 1751 when the Military Road was built records vampires at Benwell! It is inscribed to 'lamiis tribus' - 'the three vampires'. In Roman mythology a lamia is a vampire-like blood-sucking demon. The Benwell altar is the only one in the whole Roman empire dedicated to the lamiae. The altar appears on the seal of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcaslte upon Tyne."
