OC While you're waiting on a kbin app, you should know the mobile site is entirely functional as a mobile app. Just make a shortcut for your home screen

Apps are always nice, but lots of mobile websites, including the kbin one, are entirely functional as an app. In your browser you can just make a shortcut to them, and they'll appear on your home screen and act as an app....

One thing I wish both the desktop and mobile app had was the ability to collapse comment threads. It's handy to just be able to quickly click to collapse a thread at the highest level and move on to the next one. Jerboa has that function for Lemmy, but for some unknown reason they don't allow the user to change comment sorting (eg. top comments). It just forces chronological comment sorting.

Man I wish Relay was available for either Kbin or Lemmy... sigh

Meta says its new speech-generating AI model is too dangerous for public release. - The Verge (www.theverge.com)

Meta announced a new AI model called Voicebox yesterday, one it says is the most versatile yet for speech generation, but it’s not releasing it yet: The model is still only a research project, but Meta says can generate speech in six languages from samples as short as two seconds and could be used for “natural, authentic”...

Translation... "This 'AI' is hot garbage that would make us look bad if we released it in its current state, but we want to hang out with the cool AI kids... So instead, we'll say that it's SO advanced and so good that it's DANGEROUS for the public. That way we look cool, ethical, and mysterious and definitely NOT that we blew our wad on the metaverse last year and are reaching for anything to climb out of the hole we dug..."

Counter, counterpoint.. I don't think they are a dumb idea per se, or that they should be the new standard paradigm in smartphones. The issue right now with all of them is that they START at $900 and up. That's well beyond what I want to, or am willing to spend for a smart device that I will most likely have to recycle inside of three years because the battery is a disaster to replace. For me, it's not an option until it's in the sub-500 dollar range. Midrange tech is just too good to drop $1,000+ on a phone these days. I don't think foldables will be taking over anytime soon.

Microsoft did that twice already and both were colossal commercial failures. Behold the Surface Duo

I have a Pixel 7 and don't feel like I'm missing out by not having the Pro (I have had Pixel devices since the 2XL). It all depends on whether you want a larger screen (I think the 7 is already plenty large), and a telephoto lens. The processor is the same in both, and battery life is decent in both as well. $8 a month doesn't SEEM like much, but over a year it's almost $100. So you have to ask if those things are worth it to you or not. I have a Dbrand Skin on mine to make it pop a bit over the black. Overall, I think you'll be more than happy with the 7.
