I don’t think I’ll need to water the hanging baskets this evening. It's gone bit wet out there.

It was only this morning, as I gazed upon the row of Reader's Digest "Monuments of Civilization" volumes on my shelf, that I realised there may be some missing. I’ve owned these books for over 40 years, and just noticed a gap where Indochina and China should be.

On investigation, it turns out the missing volumes are on Islam and Cambodia. Presumably, in the 1970s, geopolitics made it impossible to create a decent book on China. The books are lavishly illustrated with full colour (1/2)

images commissioned for the work, and 1970s China was pretty closed to the West.

Now, the completist me wants to complete the set. They’re out there, on secondhand book sites and at reasonable prices. I don’t think I’ll hurry to finish the set, though. I don’t suppose they’re all that popular. (2/2)

Morning world. Midway to Friday. Keep buggering on.

Yesterday's was TURMOIL. I was a little disappointed there weren’t more puns on this one. I mean, it’s obviously oil made by squeezing turms. Anyway, violent confusion, din and bustle.

Rotten wood all along the doorway and panel. Disaster!! Door jamb completely gone at the bottom. Thank God we got somebody competent to do this. She is a "painter" but much more than that as it turns out.

@oldrawgabbit It’s always gratifying when you find a tradesperson worth their weight in gold. To misuse a phrase, I reckon she's a keeper!

Yesterday's mammoth savoury mince cook-in yielded 20 portions. Once it’s cooled down, I divi the gloop into 1 litre ice cream tubs, two portions per tub, then into the freezer.

It’s the only "proper" cooking (from raw ingredients) I feel comfortable doing. Best Beloved enjoys it, so that’s nice.

Some people have ‘waiting brain’ — they have an appointment at 2pm, say, and from 11:30 their brain just goes into a holding pattern, unable to do anything except wait.

I have ‘lost brain’; when I can’t find something, my brain resolutely can’t latch onto a task, even if the lost object is irrelevant to the task.

snaptophobic,
@snaptophobic@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@chrisphin I am very much "waiting brain". Part of it is continually glancing at a clock and gauging how many hours or minutes are left between now and the appointment.

It's been a zero sum day

Daughter remains in the care of a hospital due to her worsening issues. This hospital is in another part of the country and aren't great at communicating.

I'm quite unwell. Stress & tension coupled with from yesterday have led to visual and some symptoms.
Every time I dozed off I was interrupted by staff or family.

We're hoping she'll be transferred back to her local hospital tomorrow.

@MikeFromLFE That all sounds suboptimal. Here’s hoping it begins to be resolved to your satisfaction soon.

It’s been a busy day, yet I don’t think I’ve achieved anything useful. Let’s see…

I drove my neighbours to the railway station first thing.
I took Best Beloved out for a grocery shop.
We also helped a friend with his "food share" shop.
Made a medical appointment for Best Beloved.
Cooked up some savoury mince, which will be divided up and frozen in due course.
Failed at the other outstanding adulting jobs.

Good morning.

Just scrolling through my home feed and see two jokes about stacking the dishwasher, so reflected on the fact it's 2023, I'm in my mid fifties and I've never used a dishwasher.

We're all manual here, always have been, and we have simple rules.

When my wife cooks, I wash up.

When I cook, I wash up.

snaptophobic,
@snaptophobic@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@scrbblns I once asked my Mum why they didn’t have a dishwasher. She replied "I don’t need one. I’ve got your Father."

I am also a manual washer-upper. The amount of dirty dishes we produce doesn’t warrant a mechanical aid.

We're off to another steam rally this morning.

We've been to a lot of Sunday outings like this, it almost feels like we are semi retired, not having to work 7 days a week!

snaptophobic,

@Maker_of_Things Jealous. We don’t seem to get any steam or vintage rallies round here. Then again, I’ve not looked for any. 😉

@suearcher @Maker_of_Things Best Beloved and I used to visit such shows quite a lot. Sadly, his mobility is not up to wandering round fields any more.

I’d love to visit the Great Dorset Steam Rally, but I think I’d find it utterly overwhelming!
