I just got a new phone and it is just overwhelmingly bogged down in spyware. I think I may be done with android. As soon as a is capable of 5G, that's my next phone. How can I get a notification of such?

travisfw, to privacy
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

when a #privacy notice contains "we may collect and use personally identifying information" it should be called a "LACK OF privacy notice"

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

Also, how is it okay for the function on my phone to come with such a lack-of-privacy notice??

Hardware for the generation of texters: table conversation bot. A little robot in the center of the table just asks people questions, connects each others stories, and keeps conversation going.

As someone who has a very general idea of how US politics works — does this conviction prevent Trump from running for the president in the upcoming election?

travisfw,

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@uriel @rustoleumlove @grishka it is important to remember how we (US Americans) founded the country. There is a big difference between the law and morality. That's the "under god" part of the pledge of allegiance, which, I believe, even the secular left respects.

(Edit: don't get me wrong, the GOP is the worst aspect of and their choice of candidate is a horrible stain that accurately represents their corruption.)

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@uriel yes, in a country with religious freedom in the constitution, to me, "under god" means the law is NOT God's. The message is to have humility, not to express an endorsement from God. I think this somehow translated into requiring rigorous rationality, and afaict that is why it's holding up under direct attack from the GOP. Maybe I should look into the history of the Judicial Branch.

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@uriel am I sensing some hate there?

I am not a historian, lawyer, politician or otherwise qualified to lecture. For all the faults of the US, I am sure I agree with most of your laundry list.

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@uriel would you have a reference for me regarding the judicial system of the Republic of Venice?

I think maybe computers have jumped the shark. Did we learn something?

It's all so tenuous all the time. Every account is a risk. Every server helps burn the planet. Every key stroke is surveilled. Saying "no" to the greedy seems to just make them claw at everyone more aggressively.

What now? I want to close it and never type again. I know that desire is a lie to myself, but I do believe if I could somehow get food and shelter otherwise, I could do without screens for the rest of my life.

travisfw, to programming
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

I want a type system in my language.

That is, I want the data structures to project back and forth between multiple type hierarchies.

As a result,
• One type system won't have to serve all purposes.
• Smaller, specific models can reuse terminology (not by include nor dependency).
• DSLs would be easier to write.
• Some services won't have to be broken out into separate code bases.
• All hope for perfection may finally be abandoned.

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@octorine I like the idea of having an ecosystem of compatible static type checking tools.

I was thinking it would be typed, but mostly in terms of interfaces (or mixins, traits and similar concepts). In-memory binary data structures would not be explicitly described by the type system, and would be managed by the runtime. Such management would include reconfiguring the literal structures to be represented by compatible terms/types.

Just closed 71 browser tabs from yesterday. That might be my accomplishment for the day.

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@Vidyala @troublewithwords congrats! I feel tired just thinking about it.

I confess I have, after 5 or so, taken a deep breath, closed my eyes, and jammed the W key with ctrl held down until it is done.

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@troublewithwords @Vidyala you can do it, but it takes new habits. Opening a tab is kind of like buying something. Close the previous tab, or give yourself a time limit, or close all the oldest tabs on the left. I never have more than 15 open. Usually about 5. My to-read list extends beyond the horizon, but that's what it is for: wishful thinking.

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@troublewithwords @Vidyala could also open a window and/or dedicate a desktop workspace for that.

travisfw,
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

@troublewithwords I have to add: this script for creating a bookmark.html file has helped a lot to keep my tab count down.

Or pasting it into a document. It's more time than just opening the tab though.
